how to choose server hardware?

I'm looking for server hardware. I'll probably choose from an old netbook at home, or one of my friends' old desktop PCs, or buy something from a used computer store.
What should I think about, when choosing hardware to run an email server? Maybe I'll run other server applications later too.
Does processor speed matter much? If it does, in what situation would I need a more powerful processor? Is GPU ever important? Any comments on electricity consumption? Do netbooks make good servers, or are desktop PCs better -- and why?
Michal's post is blank on the forum again
A fellow member linked me to his post on a different page once before. How do I find his post myself?

Found it via thread archives linked from

understand what exact patterns cause it to be rendered blank.
Thanks!
It's because the thinks it is 1998 and won't use the forums on the Trisquel site.

Well, higher power usage means it will
*cost more
*get hotter
*get louder if it has a fan
Depending on the usage of the server, you might be more interested in either power usage when idle or power usage when operating at maximum speed.
Well, just a mailserver should be able to run on basically everything. Now making it keep up with spam is of course another matter entirely. =p
GPU doesn't matter at all for a server, normally you'd want it headless and just manage via SSH or something.
(Unless there was some kind of server application that could utilize OpenCL or whatever.. But somehow I doubt that's relevant for an email server.)
I use an older laptop to do SSH and a Minecraft server, it seems to work just fine really. In terms of power consumption I'd recommend enabling the CPU frequency scaling and whatever other power saving you can. 90% of the time a home server isn't doing much, might as well keep it cool. =p
Netbooks make excellent servers, unless you're running something heavy.
Thanks guys. I hope you don't mind; I copied/pasted some of your responses for the documentation. I put some of your info in my own words also.

It should be easier to find on the wiki than in forum archives, useful
work. I've rewritten my quotes, I don't write in a good wiki style and
it wasn't as integrated with the text as it can be.
I would not recommend a desktop computer - it would use up a huge amount of electricity. A netbook, or a minipc would be a better idea.
