I would like to know your recommendations for disk encryption software that works like TrueCrypt.
Possible candidates would be Tomb or dmcrypt.
Tomb:

dmcrypt:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm-crypt_with_LUKS
(this is from the archlinux wiki but provides a pretty good explanation)
I used Tomb myself for a encrypting my files on a USB stick.

To implement encrypted file containers, I used cryptkeeper at some point.
I now only use LUKS partition/full disk encryption, it's available from
the disk utility.
Here is a tutorial to create encrypted USB keys:

Is TrueCrypt nonfree?

Old versions of its license are nonfree, the newest one fixes all
their known problems. It might be free or nonfree. I don't know any
current analysis of it, it's very complex.
(I use LUKS and eCryptfs on my other machine, they use standard
licenses.)

"The TrueCrypt License has not been officially approved by the Open
Source Initiative and is not considered "free" by several major Linux
distributions (Arch Linux,[54] Debian,[55] Ubuntu,[56] Fedora,[57]
openSUSE,[58] Gentoo[59]), mainly because of distribution and
copyright-liability reasons.[...]"

Please see the Wikipedia page, it has more relevant information.
This absence from major distributions means no updates, so I prefer to
just use the tools already in the operating system.
