Dear all,

I hope some of you can help me with some advice regarding e-mail programs, specifically IceDove.

I am using trisquel 7, with IceDove 38.8.0 installed. Currently, I am having difficulties setting up a gmail IMAP account (I cannot get past the authentication window, an issue already discussed at:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1157498?page=2

Two solutions are suggested: one is to upgrade the mail client, and the second is to change gmail's settings to “allow less secure apps”, which is fine with me.

My questions for the forum are: should we be concerned that Trisquel's repo has IceDove 38.8.0, while Debian seems to be already in v. 52.2.1? [ https://packages.debian.org/sid/icedove ]
Is there a safe way to install the latest version? If so, how could I proceed?

I think this topic is also relevant, specially as FSF is specifically endorsing IceDove as the go-to program for e-mail in their email sefldefense website ( https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org/en/index.html )

BTW, my GNU/Linux knowledge is very limited, so please bear with me :-)

Thank you!

"we be concerned that Trisquel's repo has IceDove 38.8.0, while Debian seems to be already in v. 52.2.1?"

No. You're looking at Debian sid, which is a name for their unstable branch - what will eventually become a future Debian version. The versions in sid get updated as new versions are pulled in but once a release happens the version is then frozen for the life of that release. You're seeing something similar happening in Trisquel. If you look at Debian Wheezy (which is currently Debian's oldstable release) and you'll see a more familiar version number. Stability in Debian-land means "keeping the version number the same." Even though the version number gets frozen when a given version of Debian is released it still gets bug and security updates and so there is no need to fear the version number. :)

Yes claws-mail is a great mail client, lighweight and modular (you add
plugins for extra functionality).
I use it with POP3 for downloading mails and SMTP for sendind, as
plugins i use PGP MIME for encrypt/decrypt, sign/verify and
a plugin for new mail notification.

Can't stand the name and icon. Looks evil. Why do so many free software programs and projects unnecessarily insist on choosing off-putting, alienating, and bizarre names and icons??

I don't know, you should ask to the project developers.
Anyway i don't mind it, it's a great email client that does it's job, maybe a better name and icon would be more appealing for most users.
Most free software project are more about code than design, unfortunately propietary jails are more about design than freedom, security etc.

Yes.
In 2005, Sylpheed was forked to create Sylpheed-Claws, now known as Claws Mail.

I had the same issue and resolved it by downloading the latest version of Thunderbird. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/installing-thunderbird-linux

I'm new to GNU/Linux as well and could easily be wrong, but it's my understanding that the the Mozilla branding issue has been resolved and that IceDove will no longer be maintained. http://fossforce.com/2017/02/great-debian-iceweasel-icedove-saga/

"it's my understanding that the the Mozilla branding issue has been resolved"

I don't dare discuss it because people have expressed their dissatisfaction with my discussing legal issues on these forums. But suffice it to say that it's a complex topic and has not been fully solved.

If you're still trying to use Gmail with IceDove without "allowing less secure apps" in Gmail, you can enable 2-step Verification in Gmail

https://www.google.com/landing/2step/

and then set up an App Password

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

to use in IceDove. I just did this to resolve the same issue in Evolution.

Note that setting up 2-step Verification will require you to temporarily enable JavaScript in Gmail. I'm willing to make compromises like this that I only have to do once and facilitate my transition to free software, but RMS might not approve.
