I am looking for a program (obviously free) to fit a particular need. I am moving into a new place soon and I want to make a good impression. One of my things is I tend to listen to music a bit louder then I should. I was wondering if there were any programs that would be able to automatically adjust volume or set a maximum volume based on the time of day. So for example if quiet hours are at 21:00 I could automatically lower the volume on my computer at that time and then after say 10:00 it would go back to normal. Does anyone know of a program like that?

Use the following command:

amixer sset 'Master' 50%

Then cron can do the rest for you:

* just replace shutdown with the above command

If the terminal is too hard for you there is a GUI for it I believe.

Awesome, thanks!

Edit: You know what, the only thing with this is what would prevent me from turning up the volume again? I basically want to set a maximum volume that is enforced for that time period. Like I can't turn up the volume more even if I wanted to.

Perhaps you will also need a "roomate detector"too, maybe implemented
through a webcam + the "motion" package? Through some scripting you
could have the system lower the volume when people are around, even keep
statistics to learn presence patterns.

That would fully automate it. I believe in the 90's or 2000's I remember
hearing similar systems being described as implementing "fuzzy logic",
for example air conditioning only kicking in when people would be
around, and slowly adjusting/learning until the system knew when to
start in advance and learned from previous usage patterns.

Oh, and headphones. :)

Cheers,

f.
