Hello folks,

I have decided to migrate to gNewSense 4, Ucclia, which is another FSF endorsed "free as in freedom" distribution. It is available for download from http://www.gnewsense.org/Main/Download.

I Will probably be back when Trisquel GNU/Linux 8 will hit the floor, and will keep my trisquel account active. You may contact me via this account.

Hoping to see you again,

I ran the Ucclia Alpha for a year and was very happy with it ,it's just some of the sofware is simply out of date such as the browsers
but it certainly works great on old hardware

You can dual boot with GnewSense/ Trisquel

Have a nice day in India ;-)

Thank you, Mangy.

I just tested gNewSense 4.0 today. Seems its based on Debian Wheezy 7.2 (Someone correct me, if I am wrong.) and many software are old as compared to Trisquel 7.0. But overall, it is extremely stable (no crash or lag.) and fully support my Intel GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller.

They (Sam Geeraerts, K.Goetz, Brian Brazil and Paul O'Malley) are doing a wonderful job!

If you are thinking of going to gnewsense because you think that the packages will be newer, don't. I just installed it. It's based on Debian Wheezy, which is the old stable version and all the packages are older than Trisquel. Gnome-shell is 3.4. On Trisquel belenos it's 3.10. Iceweasel is 31.5, which is very old. Abrowser is version 49 (the numbers are based on what firefox version they are from). If you don't mind old, then go ahead. But then I don't understand why you'd leave Trisquel. It's more up to date.

Firefox 31 is unsupported. That is a serious issue. They should update to 45 ESR (which wheezy is at).

I had updated the system before checking it too. Since I posted that I've reinstalled Trisquel. Gnewsense has been plagued by out-of-date systems. It took so long for Ucclia to come out too. Not to criticize another free software project. But it makes me appreciate Trisquel.

i agree with you, another issue is you cannot install recent software due to missing dependancies...

Other solution is Trisquel 6
http://mirror.fsf.org/trisquel-images/
which is still supported

ewlabonte,

My intention is not to reject Trisquel GNU/Linux altogether from the machine. I wanted to test gNewSense GNU/Linux 4.0; that's it.

Distro-hopping is a habit which I can't resist with all my inner self control. (Before coming to Trisquel GNU/Linux, I was using Ubuntu GNU/Linux and Debian GNU/Linux; happened to hear one of Stallman's speeches, (Don't remember which one, though.) and decided to use only free software distributions endorsed by GNU/FSF. gNewSense GNU/Linux 3.1 was the very first free software distro, then flipped about Trisquel GNU/Linux 6.0 and 7.0 versions before settling down with Trisquel GNU/Linux 7.0.)

I agree gNewSense GNU/Linux 4.0 has most of its software outdated w.r.to Trisquel GNU/Linux 7.0. But that does not make it unusable from any other perspective. (You see, they are very stable and works well with old hardware, with little or no performance lag.)

All these free software distributions should coexist and cooperate, rather than compete with each other like bitter rivals; only then the users will enjoy true control over their computing.

I think we're alot alike. I distro-hop so often I maintain dual-boots on two laptops with probably 5 VMs between them. I also crave free-as-in-freedom and can't stand old software.

You might like to check out Parabola. (https://www.parabola.nu/)

I'm writing this from Trisquel, but boot to a Parabola thumbdrive often. You can find a brief jump-start on its package management system at https://linuxconfig.org/comparison-of-major-linux-package-management-systems .

I understand. I myself am a distro-hopper. I have inflicted more distro installations on this poor old laptop than any computer should ever have to endure. In that spirit I encourage you to try it out. The installation process is the debian installation, except you're not given a choice of desktops. Gnome-shell is installed by default. There's also a netbook installation iso, but I don't know what desktop that is, if it is different from the default version. I installed Xfce4, which is my default desktop environment. Unfortunately it's version 4.8. Belenos has version 4.10 and the newest is 4.12.

ConnochaetOS is as free as in freedom and is dedictade to old hardware, based on Salix, Slackware,

ConnochaetOS is a fully free/libre GNU/Linux distro for x86 computers with limited resources, based on Slackware and Salix OS. “Fully free” means, that ConnochaetOS does only contain free software and no proprietary, non-free software, blobs or firmware. Non-free parts of the upstream distros were removed and - where possible - replaced by free counterparts. ConnochaetOS retains full backwards compatibility with Slackware and Salix OS

If you're a slackware fan—and I am—I can recommend Freeslack: http://freeslack.net/ They strip all the non-free bits out and use the linux-libre kernel. Otherwise it's slackware. It's still in it's early stages, but it's very usable.
