PDF printing issue (full black areas)

Hi,
the issue is that any barely grey or colored area ends up being printed in full black
regardless of the text/image in that area.
Here's what I tried up until now (and other helpful facts):
- tweaking options from the printing menu (like grayscale etc)
- getting familiar with CUPS localhost:631
I have a netinstall, and a few updates/upgrades removed the few GUI related to printing that were installed.
But with CUPS localhost and the CLI, (and the basic GUI), I'm doing fine.
- fact: my color cartridge is in place but empty
- I use Evince as a PDF reader
- I tried, as suggested on an Ubuntu forum, that making it a jpeg is an alternative.
But there are 2 downsides : Making a long PDF into jpeg takes a decent amount of time (printing via GIMP).
And it prints a bit too light, but that might get fixed by tweaking the settings (maybe less brightness and more or less contrast).
Thanks in advance.

Might this not have something to do with it?
In the "Color" tab of the "Print" window, is the "Output Mode" set to "Black Only Grayscale"? If so, change it.
Yes, the empty color cartridge is my "last resort" thing to try (when I'll purchase it), I forgot to mention it that way.
I do have a "Color" tab, but inside I have "Color Model" with the following options:
Grayscale
Inverted Grayscale
RGB Color (default option)
CMY Color
CMYK
KCMY
And in the "Advanced" I have "Ink Type" that has the Black option,
along the default "CMYK Color", "CMY Color" and "Photo CcMmYyKk Color" options.
I played with several of these already, no change at all when it's a PDF at least.
I'm gonna try with a jpeg. And get a color cartridge.
Other than that, any additional ideas are more than welcome.
EDIT:
Well, I just needed some more trial and error (believe me, I've tried since yesterday).
I got it right with PDF and jpeg.
My printer is a Canon Pixma MP140.
The default settings aren't good.
Mine are:
"advanced" tab > Output control common: brightness at 0.300, contrast at 1.400, saturation at 0.500
Also, but probably without effect, color precision is at "best", and print quality is at "manual control".
I'd like to improve something though: the flats, the letters. I mean I can see the dots and all, and the contours aren't sharp.
It's good enough, and it's probably more economic, but I'd like to be able to print something really sharp and clean when needed.
Any idea?
