PRISM break with Trisquel and Free Software

In my opinion: yes, debian is the better choice than ubuntu.
Now concerning your question whether you have to learn twice or not:
You won't have to learn much, in best case almost nothing;
any desktop environment you use in debian can be installed in trisquel. Nevertheless, the default desktop of trisquel is a costumized gnome 3 classic desktop. You will not find exactly this desktop in any other distribution per default.
But this is no problem.
If you decide to run debian with gnome shell and you want to continue using it with trisquel, you will need a graphic device which supports 3d acceleration with free software. Such devices exist, but many graphic cards don't offer 3d acceleration.
You can install debian and find out which desktop environment is best for you. When you later on install trisquel, you can ask the community and you surely will receive help buying the right pc.
Beside of the DE, debian and ubuntu don't have major differences in everyday use.
I think this site is sponsorized by Linux Mint or the owner is a fan of it.
Maybe GNU or Trisquel must to buy a domain like prism-break.info and after that put in top of the list Trisquel and recomand Trisquel also.
By the way : Linux Deepin 12.12 is ten times more friendly and nicer than Linux Mint.
It is. See his commit: https://github.com/nylira/prism-break/issues/126
FYI, there's a brief interview with the creator of the Prism Break list on why and how he put it together. Apparently it's a work in progress and contributions are welcome on Github.
Prism-break does not recommend Trisquel any more
FSF-approved OSes do not appear in the short list. Parabola and gNewSense show up in the long list.
Trisquel was replaced with gNewSense here:
https://github.com/nylira/prism-break/commit/9ccc117e9260f459b73ac20965251bfd73f81466
It looks to me like someone has some misguided view that Trisquel is somehow magically "infected" or something by being based on Ubuntu. They similarly replaced Linux Mint with Linux Mint Debian Edition.
This is no good. This is supposed to recommend things to new users. I've heard bad things about LMDE, and I know for sure that Trisquel must be much more beginner friendly than gNewSense. People will try one of these distros, get frustrated, and then go right back to Windows or OS X.
Gah, here's where that absurdity comes from:
I thought trisquel builds everything on its own from the ubuntu sources?
then there's no need to worry.
Is extrange because Trisquel have Its own repos and all packages are carefully selected. There's also more than 100 customized packages in Trisquel.
I do not understand their logic.
Join the discussion on GitHub. I am starting to contribute to it and could use some help keeping the focus on FOSS software. Developers of projects keep trying to convince them to add proprietary software if it's "trustworthy". Most of the contributors keep them from getting added, but more nonfree/hosted keeps getting added every day. It would be great if more people from here would help contribute.
Hi guys, just registered to ask a few questions. Is Trisquel 100% libre software? Also does Trisquel only contain 100% libre software in its repos? ie can install anything from default repos without worrying about running non-free software? Thanks in advance.

The answer is a resounding YES! That's the whole point of Trisquel :).

Excellent :) is there anything I may need to know before installing. How well does gnash work with youtube, also what about mp3 support? i guess the gstreamer plugins for mp3 are non-free? correct? Does Trisquel offer full disk encryption with its installer? Thanks again.
I think that gnash works pretty well with youtube. Not sure, because I have gnash deactivated. I use the ViewTube greasemonkey script which works perfectly well. You can also use youtube/html5.
mp3 support comes out of the box. No non-free code is needed (mp3 is to be avoided for patent reasons; Trisquel is based in Spain where software patents do not apply if I understand the situation correctly).
Full disk encryption is available through the installer. Last time I tried I encountered a bug (Ubuntu bug, not specific to Trisquel), where one of my CPUs would always be at 100% with a full disk encryption setup. You may want to check if you have this bug on your machine as well.
Well, I never fully agreed with their choices, but they have done a good work so far, I learned some new things there and I am not a inexperienced user when it comes to privacy/security.
I guess it all comes down to what compromises you are willing to make (gnewsense could be used with yeeloong which is more secure than a computer with vpro running say trisquel or mint). So, I think they should suggest trisquel, even if not as a first choice. It would be MY first choice but it doesn't need to be theirs.
I agree with you. gNew Sense is probably the best because it supports MIPS. But most people don't have MIPS computers.
gNew Sense's shortcomings in software support and user community may put off new users. Trisquel has strong software support and a larger user community; it's the better stepping stone. gNew Sense is the ideal.
Thank you oysterboy for clearing that up. Ive just installed Trisquel with FDE and no cpu issues. Also gnash works very nicely and as you have mentioned mp3 works out of the box with rhythmbox.Very nice distro I must say! f00bar!
I just checked the site on August 4th and noticed that Trisquel was removed from the list, but Fedora and Linux Mint are considered ok? I thought both of these provided non-free software and blobs. Its nice to have Debian on there, but they could have ALSO put Trisquel on the list.
Why was Trisquel removed? Did the owner of the prism-break page do his research on the proeject and find it not mature enough? Run by a one man team? Stagnant in his eyes? Who knows.
I noticed, too, the Trisquel had been removed. This is disappointing: Trisquel is easy to use and fully free software. My only guess is that Trisquel is eclipsed by all those "bigger, more popular" distributions on the list.
They have this ridiculous idea that if it's based on Ubuntu, it's somehow no good because they consider Canonical to be untrustworthy.
They actually also removed Linux Mint, replacing it with Linux Mint Debian Edition, for the same ridiculous reason. They're more concerned about the way the system is made than the system itself.
Very good! Now I remove Trisquel and install OpenSuse from Microsoft SUSE/Novell. Wonderful :-D
Or remove my OS X and Windows and install Gentoo from source ;-)
**Only the new gNewSense 3 is based on Debian. The stable version is Ubuntu-based. OH NO!!!**
It just proves that whomever is running the prism-break site doesn't really know what he or she is doing and is constantly changing the site in an attempt to keep hits to their site. The Debian version of Linux Mint is actually less free than Debian as it has the kernel with the non-free blobs in it and the Adobe Flash plugin installed by default.
I actually suggested Geary as an email application to the owner of the site, but it was rejected. As you know, Geary is free software under a GPL license and there's an official PPA.
