Problem at resume from hibernate

On my new computer with Trisquel 11, I have setup hibernate (as described in this page but I also tried the alternative contents in this post). It hibernates and resumes but then, the screen is entirely black except for the pointer that I can move around.

I can used Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a terminal window and see that the mate session processes are apparently running fine. I tried killing the screen saver and the panel, in cases it does something, but no, the only recovery I could figure out is to kill the session, which somehow makes hibernate useless.

I'd be interested to know whether people can reproduce this or not, among which andyprough who has somehow the same computer.

I haven't used sleep or hibernate or anything like that for as long as I can remember - maybe not ever. When I'm not using a device I just turn it off. Even though all OS's have claimed at various times in the past to have perfected sleep/hibernate, I've seen literally thousands of bug reports, many of them with devastating consequences of data loss and inability to boot. It's one of those technologies I will probably never trust enough to spend any time trying.

I have massively used that feature and never had any problem (until that one).

In case you use sleep, I just tried and stored the laptop in my bag and when I took it back less than 30 minutes later, it was still dark (so apparently still sleep) but really hot. This would need some more testing but it reminds me of my D8 that used much more power when in sleep mode as compared with active but doing not much.

About data loss: any explanation of how that could happen if one anyway saved every work document before hibernate? I really wonder whether the issues were not due to the feature not being configured properly.

I have no clue about any of this, sorry. I do know that Wessel is super good about replying to emails though, so that's where I would start if I were you. Also the company does have a forum where you can raise issues and they are quick to respond.

Since the computer is new, I would try a newer kernel. The package linux-image-generic-hwe-11.0 is in Trisquel 11's repository. It provides Linux 6.5. To install an even newer kernel, follow the instructions on https://www.fsfla.org/ikiwiki/selibre/linux-libre/freesh

Before testing hibernation, reboot on the newer kernel.

Thanks for the advice. With the linux-image-generic-hwe-11.0 package and the kernel 6.5, the computer does not boot, so I removed it and tried with linux-libre of the freesh repository (6.9.1), then it boots fine.

At my first attempt to hibernate and resume, I had the greeter, as if I did not have an ongoing MATE session, although I was in a MATE session when going to hibernate. I logged in and my USB wifi adapter was not detected any more. I swapped USB ports between the mouse and the wifi adapter (I only have 2), then it worked. At my second attempt to reboot, I had the window to unlock the session, so it worked. However, again, wifi adapter not detected anymore, after I did unplug and replug it and after some time, it worked again.

I will systematically use hibernate to see how it goes. I never had any issue like this with the wifi USB adapter before, I will see if that happens again at resume or at some other time.
