Problems with synaptic and apt-get update

1)Synaptic won't open on my system, the window asking for a password appears and synaptic starts loading and then nothing.
2)When I run 'sudo apt-get update' I receive an error message towards the end saying something like:'Error writing to output file - write (28: No space left on device)'

I dont know if these two problems are related or not.

Do you have your system installed with a single partition, or with the
different partitions split up?

Include the output of:
df -h
Probably /var is full if you made a separate partition. If not then it's the root partition or the whole system, which you should solve quickly as it can cause the system to be unstable.

reboot!
no, seriously - this happened to me on afresh install (synaptic loading indefinitely) and I just rebooted and it was ok ever since..

The no space left part looks a tad scarier than that, though....

you are right david. I saw he registered today so I assumed he's on a fresh install of Trikel :)
Didn't pay much attention to that "no space left" :(

My internal hard drive has two partitions:one running windows(which I hardly use).

Looks like you were right trisquelian,I ran 'df -h' as suggested and one of the partitions was 100% full, how can I fix this without deleting something important?

Where is that partition mounted? At the root? If so, start with that command to remove the .deb packages (not the installed programs):
$ sudo apt-get clean

Then, remove the older kernels. From the Synaptic package manager for instance (assuming 'sudo apt-get clean' was enough to make it properly work), you can search for the installed packages named "linux-" followed by a string including some version number ("3.13.0-45" for instance) and remove all those not having the highest version number.

It's hard to tell what the problem is. What I have experienced is some software looping and creating tremendous amounts of logs, but it could be a script gone wild, for example. You should really tells us what your partition scheme is like or include the output of "df -h" so we can find where all that disk space is going to. You should follow Magic Banana's advice and clean the unnecessary ".deb" files so you can have a bit more room without the system going unstable.

Edit: Phrasing.

With regards to the problem with synaptic,it doesn't load indefinitely it just starts loading and stops running by itself for some reason.

I've attached the output of df -h as a .txt file.

The root filesystem is full. Follow my advices: https://trisquel.info/forum/problems-synaptic-and-apt-get-update#comment-64463

That said, given the size of that partition (5.7G), you will face this problem over and over again. The default install chooses 14G for that partition. I do not get how your first disk is less than 20G large. Is that correct? I see that you have a large external disk (500G). I assume you keep most of you data on it, don't you?

If so, you should enlarge /dev/sda5, taking space on /dev/sda7. In fact, you could even get rid of /dev/sda7 (user files would be on the same partition as system files): ether you reinstall Trisquel (choosing a custom partitioning schema when asked) or you edit the partitions from a live system (using GParted for instance) and adapt /etc/fstab accordingly (see https://trisquel.info/forum/cant-use-gparted-either-livecd-or-installed-trisquel). In both cases, you first want to backup the 978M of data in /home (to your external drive for instance).

> I do not get how your first disk is less than 20G large.

It's a tiny disk, notice how his home is just 13G, so the whole disk isn't 20G or barely just that.

Thank you everyone for your help, synaptic is running normally and I have access to more internal disk space.Special thanks to Magic Banana,it took me the whole day and night but your instructions were spot on.

I've attached the new 'df -h' output for anyone interested.

lembas has reported him: https://trisquel.info/en/issues/4206?page=16

You can do the same whenever you find spam on the forum.

Spelling and grammar, where art thou?

what?

No.

No.

Spacing? Capitalisation?

This sentence is a fragment. Consider revising.

> new york luxury apartments

No.

This is some of the shittiest forum advert spamming I've ever seen- worse than
the Louis Vuitton jacket hyperlink cascade type thing. There there is no
pretence at coherence- the links are presented on the off chance someone will
follow one of them. This particular piece of spam reads horribly, offers no
details, no information, no links to follow, and will fail to convince or
even influence anyone. Since no actual specific information is provided, I
would not even have a clue how to proceed even if I did wish to partake of 'It'.

I wouldn't even mind the spam that much if it was actually decent advertising.
This just makes my blood boil.

Erm...

That sentence made no sense.

Now this is just comical.
