Running Trisquel 9 in a VM on Trisquel 8

Like the title suggests I'm looking for a way to run Trisquel 9 in a VM. I was just wondering a couple things regarding non-free software which I must run. I'm currently using an iPhone and to jailbreak it there is a non-free package available through a PPA.

My solution to not contaminate my current setup was to flash Trisquel 9 MATE iso to a flash drive which I then would boot using 'Try trisquel without installing' I would then need to add the PPA, the key, install the package, then run the jailbreaking program. I have to do this every time I reboot my phone because the way the jailbreak works is it injects code during boot of phone. I figured this was the way to go since it was isolated on a USB and not running non-free code on my main OS.

This has become very tedious recently, as my phone battery keeps dying, and I've been trying to explore different options. One of these being installing a VM with Trisquel 9 and not having to install the PPA every time, nor having to reboot my machine to do this.

My questions are:

Which VM should I be using? I've never run a VM on GNU/Linux and need some advice in this regard.

Will a VM even be a correct solution? Will it isolate the non-free stuff from my main OS?

Thanks for your help!

Thank you for the link, I suppose I should've searched for VM's on the forum.

Why don't you install Trisquel 9 (and the PPA and the key and the package and...) once and for all on that flash drive?

If I understand what you mean correctly. Do you mean like use the Flash drive in place of and SSD or HDD, and do a proper install onto it?

Would I need two flash drives one with the installation iso, and another which I would install onto?

I don't know how to do this, if this is indeed what you mean.

Yes, it is what I mean. And yes, you need a flash drive besides the one with the live system. The live system can be on a DVD too. The installer on the live system should let you choose the drive where to install. You may need to choose a "Something else" installation type (or whatever it is called nowdays).

You will be temporarily using certain minor non-free software to wipe out a major anti-feature (jail, and maybe also tyrant). So don't be so shy.

However, if you need to use USB connection to unlock your phone, you'd better do it on a physical computer. USB support in free/libre hypervisors is very limited.

Thanks for telling me. I've seen elsewhere on Jailbreak forums where people have also not recommended using a VM, but I will still try. If it doesn't work, then so be it, I may have potential other uses in the future for a VM anyways.
