Just saw that MATE packages are making their way into Debian's unstable (sid) repos which means that future Ubuntu and Trisquel releases will be able to nab it without a secondary repository or PPA.
I'm only seeing one package, but it seems like the addition to the repositories is fairly new: http://packages.debian.org/sid/mate-common
