In these days I'm interested in anonymity on the web. Sometimes I used succesfully Tor on my Taranis, but unfortunately I've seen that it isn't in Slaine repositories anymore :-( . Anyway, i was looking also for some good alternatives, including something for anonymous file sharing, and I've found an interesting project called Freenet: the strange fact is that the software seems to be quite diffused but it doesn't appear in any distribution's repository...I would like to know if someone tried it, and if it is really a free software. Thank you!

https://freenet.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/freenet/LICENSE.Freenet

It appears to be licensed under version 2 of the GPL, which would make it free software.

Tor is removed from the Ubuntu's version which Trisquel 4.5 is based on.
It think the reason why it was removed from Ubuntu, is because the
package wasn't kept up to date, which is a big security risk for a
program such as Tor. The Tor project advices to use their repository,
so you can receive in much shorter time any fixes they release.

If you are using Trisquel 4.5, the you should follow this guide, as like
you are using Ubuntu 10.10 ("Maverick Meerkat"):

I dont't know about Freenet but please don't use filesharing over tor. It greatly strains the network which has limited capacity. When people fileshare over it the people who really need it (journalists, dissidents, whistleblowers, oppressed citizens) can't get to their websites. The network is designed to be low latency but only has a certain amount of bandwidth depending on the relays available. Lets say I'm in Iran and I try to reach a website I would like to have it load in a reasonable amount of time. However a file-sharer may not care about latency for files transfer. They can always use the max amount of bandwidth and just go to sleep and the file should be done when they wake up. This slows down everyone else though.

As far as why tor isn't in the repos in Slain I can't answer that question. I wasn't aware as I installed from the PPA. Maybe I'll ask Ruben and find out.

Thanks for your replies! I think the reason that Mampir said seems reasonable, and actually on tor project's site they suggest the same... I knew about filesharing and tor, indeed I used it just sometimes through firefox for normal navigation (just for trying it) and for reaching piratebay.org (it is censored here in italy)... I'll try freenet one of these days and i'll inform you!

I checked w/ Ruben. It is in fact not in there because it was removed from Ubuntu. He said he was going to look into getting it included (probably via PPA). Get back to us about the freenet thing.

Thank you very much and thanks to Ruben also! If it would be icluded again it would be great!

About Freenet, I tried it a little bit in these last two days, and I appreciated it very much! Altough it is very slow, not much populated and still in development, it has a wonderful concept and represents a completely alternative network with respect to internet... It is completely decentralized (each user is a node and share a fraction of his hard disk for the community), and it could represent a very good instrument for people who lives in not-democratic places.
