Hello everyone. Ever since I upgraded to Trisquel 11 I've encountered a strange error on video playback. The files play fine on the same video players on other GNU/Linux distros like Lubuntu or even Trisquel 10 mini.

So, i clicked on a .mkv file I downloaded and upon opening it with vlc player, it showed my BIOS splash screen, closed all open programmes, and logged me out. It didn't reboot or anything, it just logged me out of my Trisquel user account, requiring me entering the password on the screen lock page to log back in. I switched to SMPlayer and the file played no problem at all.

I thought the problem solved, but today I tried to open an .mp4 video file, and no matter what player I use, it just logs me out of my account? I've never seen anything like it? I tried MPV player, VLC, some others... they all do it.

Does anyone know what's happening? If you need error logs, I can provide them but please bare in mind my username is a very accurate one, so you might need to tell me which ones and how to get them...

Does this only happen with video players? Similar symptoms, albeit occurring with different applications, have been reported and solved using this method:

You may want to try it if you are also using integrated Intel graphics.

Hello Prospero! Thanks for the reply. I wasn't able to replicate that user's problem with those applications, it only happens with video files and video players for me, but the diagnosis in that forum post is the correct one. It's an issue with MATE and the old Intel integrated graphics. To test this I switched desktop environments from the login screen, and the problem completely went away. Instead of following the solution augustoborin used, I decided to switch to LXDE permanently, but instead of just installing the environment and switching to it, I did a fresh install of Trisquel 11 Mini in the stead of the full version. It just seemed cleaner that way. I never did get on with MATE and if it's going to behave like that then it can go and bother someone else.
