Trisquel 5.5 is purely delightful

Big thanks to the team for this one! I've used GNOME 3 fallback on Ubuntu, and I just had to get used to their crappy design choices, and many annoyances and kinks I had to learn to live with. None of those issues exist in Trisquel.
The simple bottom bar even looks really great. I love the semi transparent, black look it has. The bar looks really slick. I mean it really does, and the icons pop contrast well with the bar's background.
Thanks for another awesome release.I like the dark and blue colors we have now, and I think everything about 5.5 blends well and is great eye candy.
didn't mean to leave pop in the post
Welcome to the GNU World.
Hi,
Thanks to Trisquel I began to understand what it means and the importance to use free software and as a consequence free hardware.
The only part of the laptop that did not work, was the pci-e wifi adapter but after testing the OS for three weeks using a free usb wifi adapter, it was time to order a new free pci-e from Think Pinguin which works right out of the box. :)
I believed that every user that come to Gnulinux using any distro, is searching for freedom in a particular way, but perhaps without the realization of it. With this project like some others we can finally grasp that what we where searching for.
And the end result of this journey, is that I ´m the proud user of a 100% free Trisquel-Xfce 5.5 OS.
Thanks to all for the effort and the good work!
I have a feeling 6 is going to be the breakout release. Devs will have more
experience with the shell and more applets will hopefully be ported over from
GNOME 2.
It's great to hear that 5.5 works out well for you Nathan! A friend installed
it through the updatemanager and has only had issues since. Abrowser would
crash, and the filemanager too.
This is the best GNU Linux since Ubuntu is using Unity i am very disappointed
but Trisquel rocks in every way, stable, secure and full of happines.
Downloaded Mini and really, really liked it until ...... no functioning Flash
in any browser possible because the flashplugin-nonfree that would make it
work is verboten to this cultish group. The rest of us will just wait for
the new Lubuntu or stick with the other distros that strive to attract users
not drive them away. And they wonder why Linux can't get traction with the
average person and never will.
Two links for you:
- This one to play most Flash videos people care about;
- This other one to understand why the whole system should be called "GNU/Linux" and not Linux, which is only a kernel.

It's GNU/Linux because Linux is only the kernel. All the tools; like
grep and what not, are GNU tools. In other UNIX OSes they have "like"
tools. But, they are different. Solaris 10 sed works differently
because it's Sun's sed... Not GNU sed.

Too bad that in the last version (5.5) the "taskbar" cannot be resized. It is
too wide by default. Or, it is a solution for this issue? Anyone?

Trisquel is not a sect and nothing's verboten. If you need the Flash plugin,
it's far better to simply copy one flash file (the plugin .so itself) than
install the whole package as Ubuntu or #!Crunchbang offers. So go to Adobe
and download the TAR.GZ file.
Or you can have a go at Linterna Magica (remove gnash, first).
But I agree with what you say at first. Trisquel Mini 5.5 is delightful and
elegant.
thanks a lot for the new trisquel. I love the new look a lot and am really
greatful for your decision not to use gnome 3. I have tried to use it several
times with ubuntu and it's slow and impractical. It unnecessarily makes the
computer look as if it had a touch screen as well..
Trisquel 5.5 Mini here and it does indeed rock my boat.
Lightweight, swift and 100% libre.
What else would you need?

well... it's not quite "secure".
They don't implement a firewall and SELinux by default. ... or at least the last time I checked.
Well, they use AppArmor which many people consider easier to setup and better supported.
http://www.suse.com/support/security/apparmor/features/selinux_comparison.html
Well, I work in an environment that says any proposed GNU/Linux System must use SELinux in order to be used on the network. It might be due to the fact that SELinux is crafted by the NSA guys. The environment is really strict as far as security goes. It's to the point where even though it's easier to setup and better supported it doesn't quite make it more secure. Which obviously is opinionative.

why are you on the trisquel list if you have an attitude like that?
Trisquel is a free distribution, they haven't exactly made it hard to
understand flash is proprietary software, so... not there. On 05/01/2012

Technically, people seek out Trisquel as an alternative to Ubuntu, or in your case, Lubuntu. It is a niche distribution that you go into knowing that many creature comforts of the past like Flash or proprietary drivers will not work.
Think of it as a distribution that forces you to behave yourself and be more cautious in the programs you install and what is actually going on behind the scenes. It also reminds you that the software on the system can be run and studied without restrictions.
With your Flash problem, you can try an alternative like Gnash or Lightspark. If you do seek out the Flash player from the Canonical Partners repository or bundled with Google Chrome, you are using software that doesn't fit well with the distribution.
If your point is to install a free distro and load it up with non-free software, then just install Lubuntu and forget about Trisquel. Also your comment about Linux not gaining traction being Trisquel's fault is untrue. The newbie user is more inclined to install a distribution like Ubuntu over Trisquel due to popularity.
If you want to blame someone, blame the personal users and corporations who are afraid to leave their comfort zone and give an alternative OS a try.

Due to the nature of the Gnome Fallback, most of the functionality of Gnome 2 isn't there and Ruben had to hard code a lot of elements in the taskbar to maintain the old look. In return, looks took precedence over functionality and its not as easy to customize. Maybe the 12.04 codebase that will be used in 6 will have more extras and applets to bring back Gnome 2 stuff.
You could also just install MATE from http://mate-desktop.org/install/#ubuntu and install the themes and icons from Trisquel 5.0 to get the same look and functions in 5.5.
(When are these duplicate posts going to be fixed?)
In the GNOME 3 you need press alt.
In this case: alt + right click.
Thank you very much ! So simple (if you know ...)
