Hi to everyone. Why there is in Trisquel 8 the generic kernel 4.4.0-XXX and no longer the low latency kernel as in Trisquel 7? Thank you.
Trisquel being a general-purpose distribution, the question should be rather: "why, before Trisquel 8, wasn't Trisquel shipping a generic kernel by default?".
If you want a low-latency 4.4 kernel (for example because you do computer music), it is in Trisquel's repository: install the "linux-image-lowlatency" package. You can, for example, execute 'sudo apt install linux-image-lowlatency' in a terminal or use the "Synaptic Package Manager". You can then reboot on that kernel (to select in GRUB's menu) and remove all the "linux-image*-generic" packages with 'sudo apt purge linux-image*-generic" or using the "Synaptic Package Manager".
As your question is almost the same as mine, what is the response to yours?
I don't recall low latency ever being the default in Trisquel. But even if it were I would argue that low latency is not a good choice for a *default* kernel: Because a) not everyone requires it and b) even though not everyone will require it, making it the default imposes the limitations of a low latency kernel on everyone by default in order to satisfy the needs of a subset of everyone, which doesn't seem right. What limitations? Well, for one low latency kernels sacrifice some power saving features in order to reach their goal of having low latency. Not everyone requires that so why not let people have their power saving features while leaving low latency as an option for those that really need it? It's just a sudo apt install away after all.
Maybe there are reasons I'm unaware of for which a non-musician might want a lowlatency kernel, but any musician who really needs one also needs to use JACK instead of pulseaudio. If they are capable of installing and configuring JACK themselves, they are also capable of installing a different kernel from the default. Of course, most "Linux musicians" (they haven't heard of GNU) are not using Trisquel, but are using one of the distros that come preconfigured for audio production and unfortunately include proprietary software.

Sure; they might be controlling a laser. Or who knows what. My post wasn't to say there's no use for such kernels; only about it being the default one.
Low latency was the default on Ubuntu for several years. I assume Trisquel was simply attempting to stay in parallel development as much as possible to avoid headaches.
