This is my very first post, here. I recently installed Trisquel 8.0 on a drive, to be used in my Thinkpad R61. Every time I boot the system I have to do it twice. The first attempt just gives a blank, yet backlit, screen. I have to hold down the power button to shut it down, then the second time it boots fine. Is there a fix for this behaviour?
I know that my R61 is full of hardware/software backdoors and that it's not one of the Thinkpads that can be Librebooted. I absolutely want to get the Librebooted T400 that one forum member sells, but for now I'm stuck with using what I have. Also. this is my first taste of a free-software OS. I've been using Linux exclusively since the summer of 2011 and I should know a lot by now, but unfortunately I don't know all that much. Nevertheless, this is my first ever attempt to ask for help concerning Linux, or more appropriately GNU/Linux, in this instance.
I just recently, 1 week ago, bought myself an iPhone SE. From all of the free-software topic reading that I've done over the past few days, I now see the error in this purchase. Unfortunately I'm now stuck with this spyPhone/eyePhone for the next 2-years, so I'll use it and let them collect their data. I'm thinking that it's probably not a good idea to plug the iPhone into a free-software computer, either for charging or extracting the video and image files, correct? Since I have many caddys and drives, I can use a non-free OS for the iPhone. Opensuse gives me a DCIM folder, just like most cameras create, so I'll probably continue using that for the iPhone, but I'm just curios what kind of bad things could potentially happen if I hooked the iPhone up with a free-software OS being utilized.
I came across some info recently on Wikileaks that descibed in great detail about how the CIA has built tools to imbed itself in linux systems though USB devices and any device that the USB drive is inserted into also becomes compromised. Are there efforts in the free-software-community that are taking measures to thwort the CIA's efforts, here?
And my final question is, which Atheros wifi card should I buy for this R61, to use Trisquels or any other FSF approved, or Debian-free, OS with?

Trisquel 8 is still alpha.

I do not really see the point of using openSUSE (which is quite bad, freedom-wise) to transfer your smartphone's data. Use Trisquel. GNU/Linux does not automatically files on a USB device (contrary to Windows still?).

http://libre.thinkpenguin.com and https://tehnoetic.com sell Wifi USB adapters that are guaranteed to work with 100% free Linux kernels, hence with 100% free GNU/Linux systems such as Trisquel. As far as I know, they are the only two companies doing so. If you want to buy elsewhere, then search http://h-node.org for recent reports of adapters working with 100% free GNU/Linux systems and hope the manufacturer has not changed the chipset (what matters for the support) of the found model. Manufacturers do that and there is no way to know but through testing.

You can buy an internal card too. However, there is a risk: Lenovo is known to implement hardware DRM preventing the user from replacing the Wifi card with a "non-approved" one, a white list.

"Trisquel 8 is still alpha"

When this OS is based off of code from April 2016 and is still an early work in progress in August 2017, it is an abandoned project at this point.

Thank you for your reply. The R61 has the Middleton Bios firmware, so the whitelist is gone. I'm not interested in the USB wifi stuff, for reasons of loss. I know that Atheros, in 2008 began working with FSF to make their 9k wifi chipsets FSF compatible and I think that this kind of company needs support as well. So, if someone can tell me the correct Atheros wifi card to buy for the Thinkpad R61, then I'd really appreciate it.
Trisquel 8.0 is alpha, but does that mean that there's no work around for my problem?

It means problems are to be expected and it will be harder for you to find help since most of us use Trisquel 7.

As for where to buy the Wifi card, I believe I answered: what I wrote for USB adapters is true for internal cards. Or do you want to know the format that fits in your laptop? Any Mini PCIe card (i.e., not necessarily half-height) according to page 77 in http://tim.id.au/laptops/lenovo/thinkpad%20r61%20r61e%20r61i%20widescreen.pdf

Thank you, again, for your reply. No, you really haven't answered my question. I'm not wanting to know where to buy anything, I simply want to know the correct model of Atheros wifi card to purchase for the R61. I know the model of Atheros card that Libreboot reccomends, but I thought I might get feedback from people with experience that might know a better card for my specific model laptop. I already know that the card is a pci-e connection and to avoid the half-size cards unless I want to have to buy an adapter also. Thank you for your effort.

Again: the model does not matter. What matters is the chipset. A same model can have different chipsets along its market life. And, again, either you take a card from http://libre.thinkpenguin.com or http://tehnoetic.com and you can be sure it will work or you bet that the chipset of some model has not changed since some has written (on http://h-node.org or elsewhere) that it was working on a 100%-free GNU/Linux system.

Did I miss your point Owen?
Why did you choose to use version 8 of Trisquel instead of version 7?

You should not have any problem when using version 7.
