Hello
I'm pleased to announce the release of Trisquel-Gamer: a live DVD full with Free Software games, just boot and play!. The project homepage is http://code.google.com/p/trisquel-gamer/
The project goal is to provide a live DVD full of Free Software games, that is playable without the need to install anything. Also, Trisquel Gamer allows to save game data and settings automatically in a USB flash drive: Just connect an USB flash drive after booting the DVD and it will save your data in it. No additional configuration is required.
Trisquel Gamer is completely free software and the Live DVD will only contain free software games with free media licenses. There is a list of the games included at http://code.google.com/p/trisquel-gamer/wiki/GamesIncluded
All the games included in Trisquel Gamer have an article at http://libregamewiki.org/ and http://freegamer.blogspot.com/ . So if you are a fan of those sites you will probably recognize all the games included.
The live DVD iso is available as a Torrent download at http://trisquel-gamer.googlecode.com/files/trisquel-gamer-2010-2.iso.torrent (Please help me seed!) If you have some free time please check it out, and report any bugs you find to http://code.google.com/p/trisquel-gamer/issues/list
Please remember this is the first release of Trisquel Gamer and it will have bugs for sure, so please be patient.
I'll write some documentation this weekend, but if you are familiar using Linux distributions on a live DVD, I'm pretty sure there will be no problem figuring Trisquel Gamer out.
I hope you find it enjoyable.
Regards. David Zaragoza

This is wonderful, at least in concept (I have not tried it). GNU/Linux LiveDVD distros filled with games are common these days, but this would be the first one that is completely free software. Make sure you get GNU.org informed about your project, so they can add it to their list of free systems.
The list of games could use a bit more variation. I suggest you add Secret Maryo Chronicles to have a platform game, Nexiuz for a first-person shooter, and rRootage for a 2D shooter. Finally, the well known Super Tux Kart would be a better choice for a racing game than the obscure Stormbaan Coureur.
Thank you!
It's a good idea to inform the GNU people about Trisquel Gamer, maybe they are interested in adding to the list of free distributions.
About the games: Well this is only the first release and my goal was to include at least 16 games (there are 18 in the DVD), so there are a lot of games I have not considered yet.
I'm reviewing every game included in the DVD to ensure both the source code and the media are released under a free license.
About the games you recommended:
* Secret Maryo Chronicles: I'm checking the media license right now, and will probably include it in the next release.
* Nexuiz: I could not get it to run in my computer, so I didn't include it.
* rRootage: I don't know that game, I will check it.
* Super Tux Kart: I considered including it, but I'm not sure if the media license is truly free.
Regards
I'm trying to (slowly) develop a website about libre gaming. And I think I've already verified SMC and Nexuiz. I'm sure STK is free, because I'm following its development close (it's a great game). And I didn't knew about rRootage, I'll investigate about it.
Good to know.
I'm already planning for the list of games to include for the next release. STK is already included (I checked that debian have already removed some non-free things). I will publish the list of upcoming games in the project website soon.
I encourage you to get rRootage from Trisquel's repos and try it out for yourself; it's a great game that never got the right publicity. Suffice it to say that the entire game is a "boss battle". I'm certain you will find it to be a very exhilarating example of a 2d shooter.

It sounds really interesting! The idea of publishing a free gaming
distro crossed our minds several times in this past years, but we never
had the time. It would be wonderful to see a community driven project
aimed to maintain it.
> Trisquel Gamer is completely free software and the Live DVD will only

As your project shares our philosophy about freedom, we invite you to
join our development community. We would be happy to give you some
space in our infrastructure (to have the iso images in our servers and
mirrors), including the wiki and the bug tracker. Your releases would
also be featured in our frontpage.
Of course you can keep your independence if you wish, we will still
give you the proper credit you deserve for your efforts. :)

Are all those coming from our repos, or do you manually include some of
them?

I'm glad you find the project interesting, and I'll make my best effort to properly maintain Trisquel Gamer going.

Well thanks for the invitation! It will be very nice to add Trisquel Gamer as a proper subproject of Trisquel. Nevertheless I'm very picky about what games to include and not sure if the Trisquel community will be OK with that.
Other thing I worry about is the release schedule: I understand Trisquel will be releasing short term support every 6 months, but with the current state of Trisquel Gamer I think a shorter release schedule is better, at least until there are a lot of games tested and supported.
Other than that, I will be honored to be part of the Trisquel development community.
>Are all those coming from our repos, or do you manually include some of
>them?
All the games I included come from the Trisquel repositories. For the moment I'm more interested in verifying that the license of the games is truly free and checking that the games works properly, than to compile things on my own.
Regards
PS. I'm Spaniard (Spanish?) I'm using English for everything because I think can reach more people this way. But being Trisquel an Spanish project, will it be better if a write in Spanish?

Planeshift - GPL // Media no libre.
sauerbraten - zlib licence ( aceptada por FSF) // Media no libre
AssaultCube - zlib // Media no libre
TREMULOUS - GPL // Completamente libre
Alien Arena - GPL // Media no libre
supertuxkar - GPL // Completamente libre
[1] http://xltwo.co.nr/development/project.php?page=rejected

That won't be a problem as far as you follow the guidelines for free distros.
If the games are free, then pick them as you like.

I suggest you to start with a variable release schedule while the distro is in
the testing stage: release when needed and use the date as version number.

We will be glad to have you here, please join the trisquel-devel mail list.
It is mostly dead by now, but we need to change that!

Sounds right. In fact, some of the latest reports about non-free bits in
the repos where about games -I guess they receive less care than other kind of
packages-, so it is a very needed task.
> PS. I'm Spaniard (Spanish?) I'm using English for everything because I

You can continue using English if you like. The devel list is in that
language -but we are not strict about that-, and since we started working
with the FSF we keep moving to it for all the development tasks.
Mclaud2000,
Any game that is in the Trisquel repos should be 100% free both in the functional code and in aesthetic content (music, art, story, etc). You have a lot to choose from. :)
You should add Nexuiz IMO. It's one of the best FPS games ever released as free software.
Done. I added Nexuiz to the next release.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Multilingual post:
English:
Hello everyone
I made a list with the new games that will be available in the next release.
Check it out at http://code.google.com/p/trisquel-gamer/wiki/NextRelease
Also, I plan to join the Trisquel development community in the near future, so probably the next release will be available at the Trisquel servers.
So, I'll take care of that part :D (just this time, I think in general English is okay for everyone):
Galego: (tradución un pouco libre)
Boas a todos:
Fixen unha lista dos videoxogos que han estar dispoñibles na seguinte versión.
Pódena ver en: http://code.google.com/p/trisquel-gamer/wiki/NextRelease (en inglés)
Ademais, dentro de pouco penso unirme á comunidade de desenvolvedores de Trisquel, así que probablemente a seguinte versión de Trisquel Gamer estará dispoñible nos seus servidores oficiais.
I've updated the status on freedoom/prboom, it is now fully free:
http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/List_of_software_that_does_not_respect_the_Free_System_Distribution_Guidelines#freedoom
http://www.nongnu.org/freedoom/
It will be available from Trisquel 3.5 onwards.
The same also applies to blobwars, starfighter, viruskiller and blobandconquer.
mcclaud2000,
The list looks good. You have a great variety of games!
A few questions/suggestions:
- Why did you remove Bos Wars? It's a better RTS than Advanced Strategic Command.
- Why no Battle for Wesnoth?
- Why no LinCity-ng?
- Why Trackballs instead of the popular Neverball?
- Is Cultivation's public domain status an issue?
- SuperTux and Secret Maryo Chronicles are so similar as to be redundant to include both on one distro. Perhaps you could remove SuperTux (SMC is the better Mario-like platformer) to save a bit of disk space for something else?
- For the Rogue/Nethack/Moria fans, I strongly suggest you include the game Egooo.
Of course, we can be endlessly picky about what games are included, but I think the above questions are valid to consider.
Oh I knew this would happen, the additions list is confusing.
I didn't remove Bos Wars, Wesnoth, Lincity, Neverball or any of the other games I listed in in the first release (http://code.google.com/p/trisquel-gamer/wiki/GamesIncluded). The list http://code.google.com/p/trisquel-gamer/wiki/NextRelease contains the games that will be ADDED, I didn't remove any of the games from the previous release, except Flightgear. I will merge both list to avoid confusion.
Cultivation's public domain status isn't a problem, because public domain means the material is not copyrighted and no license is needed.
SuperTux and SMC, They both are similar, but Supertux is more like the original super mario bros and SMC is more similar to super mario world. Each game have similar theme, but different mechanics.
Egoboo: I had some issues with textures not being displayed, so I didn't included it.
Thanks for clarifying.
Public domain software is free software as long as the source code is made available; if that condition is fulfilled, it's pretty similar to releasing software under a permissive (BSD-like) license. Cultivation, I'm certain, provides full source code. But someone releasing software as public domain is not legally bound to release its source code, and if source is unavailable then it is not free software, because it's virtually impossible to develop a patch for binary-only software.
Perhaps the Egoboo problem is an issue that is only specific to your own graphics card or driver, not those of other users in general.
The bug with egoboo's graphics has been reported by other people at ubuntu's launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/egoboo/+bug/119536
It affects Intel and AMD cards, I tested with both configurations.
There's a new version of Trisquel Gamer 2010-2-16 available for download at http://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel-gamer/
The new release includes 50 games (Game list at http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/included-games), a reworked application menu and GUI improvements for the USB autodetection feature.
Enjoy!
Awesome, I'm going to burn this pretty soon.
Have you considered Glest, btw?
Yes, I considered adding Glest, but it is in Ubuntu's multiverse repository, so it isn't completely Free Software.
There's a new version of Trisquel Gamer 3.5 RC available for download at http://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel-gamer/
The new release includes 57 games (Change list: http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/next-release-1), addition of missing music files in games and some GUI tweaks.
Enjoy!
I thought it was a better idea to keep it down to 50 games. You don't want software bloat and too many redundant/low quality games in the distro, do you?
On the other hand, adapting the user interface is a great idea.
Sorry for the late answer, I have been very busy these past weeks.
I think 50 games are too few for the great amount of quality games that are available for for GNU/Linux today. Yet, I followed your suggestion and re-checked all the games in RC, and removed a couple that are more than 5 years old, so now there are 55 games available in the DVD.
And yes I don't want the distribution to be bloated, but the size of the Live DVD is only 3.4 GB with 55 games, so I think it isn't bloated at all.
Regarding the quality of the games: Well I tested them personally and weed out the ones that I considered low quality or too old, like text console games, games with confusing user interfaces, projects in early development stage, etc. Also took out games that are redundant if they don't add any value to other versions, eg. There are at least 3 simcity clones in the repositories, but the only difference between is the maturity of the game, not the features they provide.
Furthermore, I only include games that have positive reviews in the Free Gamer blog (http://freegamer.blogspot.com/), my own judgment and of course, the suggestions I receive from users.
Thanks for your comments

A friend has said me that there is a problem with the torrent: "«unregistered torrent pass»". It was reported here
http://code.google.com/p/trisquel-gamer/issues/list
before, but it seems a bit forgotten.
Awww this is just horrible.
There used to be a song, started out somehow Wasted Days and Wasted Nights....
This is going to get me to wastin' a lot of days and nights!
lol
janus
This DVD rocks! Especially Frets on Fire, I'm playing it for three days straight now and I'm pretty close to mastering the Medium difficulty. And in the first song I'm even getting 4 stars on Amazing!
It looks like Trisquel Gamer has fallen behind the main versions of Trisquel. Let's hope mcclaud2000 releases the taranis-based edition soon, if he isn't too busy.
