On a laptop with Intel graphics and a live Trisquel 10, the brightness function keys do not work. Also, the directory "/sys/class/backlight/" is empty.

Furthermore, although sleep appears to work, the screen remains black upon opening the lid.

As usual with hardware problems, you could try a newer kernel (Linux). Trisquel 10 has versions 5.8 and 5.13 in its repository. If you want to try an even newer kernel, https://www.fsfla.org/ikiwiki/selibre/linux-libre/freesh explains how to install version 5.15 (current long-term-support version) or 5.17 (latest version).

Could you please explain how to install version 5.13? Will such an installation work in a live environment?

As far as I know, you cannot change the kernel of a running live system. I thought you wanted to install it. Once Trisquel is on your hard drive, you can install the linux-image-5.13 package (or something like that: you can search "5.13" in the "Synaptic Package manager" for instance) and reboot to run the newer kernel.

Is it not possible then to troubleshoot these issues whilst still being in a live Trisquel? After all, one of the purposes of a live operating system is to test whether it works with the hardware before actually installing the system.

But the live environments has limitations. It's not a fully "normal" copy. Doing this kind of change requires a reboot into the new kernel, and when in the live environment changes to system files, like the kernel, are not saved across reboots. Even if you enable persistence. You could test it in a live Trisquel by first making a new live image with a newer kernel. But that's probably about it. It's probably easier to do the install, even if it's onto a test partition on the drive that's just large enough to hold an installed system. Or even onto a spare drive that you don't care of.

I recall there was a time it was possible to install on a usb drive, haven't tried that in 12+ years, is that still a thing?

That shouldn't be any different from doing an install on an SSD or HDD. It's still a drive. :) I would expect it to be selectable in the installer the same as any other.

Searching for "5.13" in the "Synaptic Package Manager" produces a long list of packages, each having multiple versions. Could you please specify which package(s) I require?

Is there a package simply named linux-image-5.13? If so, install it and reboot.

linux-generic-hwe-20.04 is the latest kernel I can find.

In your case it would be:

linux-image-5.13.0-39-generic

Yes: install linux-generic-hwe-20.04. I thought there would be 5.13 in the name, but there is not.

linux-generic-hwe-20.04 is a meta package, it will install the latest 5.13.

Excuse my incomprehension, but neither "linux-image-5.13.0-39-generic" nor "linux-generic-hwe-20.04" exist in that screenshot.

You need to install Trisquel to an HD/SSD and then update the package repos over the internet.

Installing the current LTS version of Linux-libre fixed my hardware problems.
