Unexpected touchpad scrolling behavior

On a Trisquel 11 system, freshly installed on a laptop with a working touchpad:

1. horizontal two-finger scrolling only works if vertical two-finger scrolling is also selected (in Control Center > Mouse > Touchpad tab).

2. vertical side scrolling does not work if vertical two-finger scrolling is selected.

3. horizontal side scrolling does not work, even when vertical side scrolling is selected.

Some of it may be due to hardware limitations, but I never ran into this previously, although I may not have tested all these options in previous versions. All other touchpad options work fine.

I am not sure whether this should be posted in the issue tracker here, or upstream, or whether there are some ergonomic reasons (i.e. not a bug). It feels like some checkboxes should at least be greyed or unavailable if some of this is deliberate.

If someone could confirm behavior #3 on a different laptop, that may help ruling out or confirming a hardware problem.

I just found this issue: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-control-center/issues/228.

The mockup screenshot seems to be hinting at some hidden hierarchy between the various scrolling options, and hence possible incompatibilities.

Solved by installing xserver-xorg-input-synaptics.

Many thanks to Ark74 for the tip.

EDIT: this seems to be a deliberate choice by libinput, so maybe xserver-xorg-input-synaptics could still be installed by default? This looks like a regression.
