I too was wondering this after seeing a Linus Tech Tips video on the topic, then I realised that a Core 2 Duo from 2008 and no GPU is gonna make no difference.
BTW Trisquel 8 is based on 16.04 not 18.04, you're thinking of 9. Also sweet 16-core rig you have there :)
Oops, I had a mind lapse for a second there regarding the versioning. They should hurry up as Ubuntu 20.04 comes out next month!
As for the CPU, I built a new dev machine with a Ryzen 3700X back in July.
Does that CPU also not suffer from the same fate as Intel ME (except the AMD version I don't know it's name)?

So even if the software was GPLv3, he still wouldn't want people looking at the code and potentially improving it. Interesting.

You're welcome. I used Folding@Home on m PS3 when I was eleven, and I
wanted to use it on my computers when I was idle, but I was disappointed
to find out it was proprietary.

Have these people not heard of BitCoin? There are definitely ways to verify the results coming into their system and if they're not using them, they're a bit naive. Not publishing the source code under a free license doesn't do a single thing to prevent Bad Actors from reverse engineering their software and feeding them bogus results. Classic security-by-obscurity.
I think their concern is scientific integrity, which is understandable. Plus, academic institutions have gotten in trouble before over falsified research.

That makes no sense to me. Scientific integrity implies free software.
