Hi,

How are you guys?

What are some good options for hosting video? I've heard of Media Goblin and Peer Tube software; do you know of any instances that you'd recommend? I'd rather not self-host unless there is a significant disadvantage.

I'm thinking of posting some home videos to share with family. Maybe photographs too? I'd like to keep the option open for making it public.

I've been using odysee.com recently. Seems to work well. I think it's supposed to be all free software running it.

You might want to browse this list, and pick an instance that is convenient for your needs: https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list.

Some instances do not seem to allow new user registration, or might not allow all users to upload content. I cannot recommend any, not using any, but in any case your content will most probably lay unencrypted on their server. There lies the most significant advantage of self-hosting private content.

By default, PeerTube now allows users to choose among four confidentiality options: public, internal (available for logged users of the instance only), unlisted (private link only) and private (only the user can see it after logging in). You should check first whether the option you want to use is available on a given instance.

I am not aware of any listing of Media Goblin instances, I guess it is mostly used for self-hosting.

EDIT: There happens to be a short list of Media Goblin instances there, they all have restricted membership: https://wiki.mediagoblin.org/Live_instances.
