Webm, A Browser, and youtube?

Hi,
I'm running I18N Edition, with all updates as of Monday, Oct. 24.
As I understand it, appending '&webm=1' to youtube links is
supposed to cause youtube to present the indicated videos in a webm
player. Does A Browser support this? Do I need extensions or
plugins? I've tried using Flash Video Replacer extension, but most
of my selected videos will not play. The extension passes bad links
to totem.

All you have to do is enter youtube.com/html5 and activate the test
using the link provided if you have a compatible browser.

As I understood, you can add '&webm=1' to youtube *search* URLs (not
video URLs). It's how it works for me. Compare [1] and [2] as an
example (1440 and 893 thousand of results respectively).
You can also try to add '&html5=True' to any given non-WebM *video* URL
and see if it helps. Compare [3] and [4] as an example. I'm not sure
how this part works exactly (and whether it would work for you), but in
my case, when I add '&webm=1' to search URL and then pick a video from
the search results, youtube automatically redirects my browser (in two
steps) to an URL that ends with '&html5=True'.
All the above won't necessarily work for others. These are just results
of my experiments and guesses based on the information from [5]. This,
in particular:
"If you want to find videos with WebM formats available,
you can use the Advanced Search options to look for them
(or just add &webm=1 to any search URL)"

So, this youtube html5 trial is nearly useless to me, since it only
works with searches, not subscriptions or shared video links. Even
with searches, videos with adds won't be available in webm. Flash
video replacer rarely works. I guess it's back to the mobile
youtube site, where videos sound horrible and often get cut off at
about the 10-minute mark.

There are various Greasemonkey scripts that can be used to watch Youtube
videos. For example, there is http://linterna-magica.nongnu.org/. The
guy who wrote this script also reads this mailing list, and most
probably also uses Trisquel, so you can write to him, if you have
problems with the script.
The problem with Youtube is that when they change something on the
website this breaks the compatibility with many 3rd party programs and
scripts, such as FlashVideoReplacer. When the compatibility is broken
many 3rd party developers usually fix this in a short while, and then
it's up to the user to upgrade to the latest version of the program or
script.
I watch Youtube videos regularly. I don't use the HTML5 trail. I use
my own simple Greasemonkey script to see a list of the various formats
available for a certain Youtube video, and download the one I prefer. I
can watch the video while it's downloading. The list looks like this,
and is in place of the video player (every line is a download link for
the corresponding video file):
46 – hd1080 (video/webm;+codecs="vp8.0,+vorbis")
37 – hd1080 (video/mp4;+codecs="avc1.64001F,+mp4a.40.2")
45 – hd720 (video/webm;+codecs="vp8.0,+vorbis")
22 – hd720 (video/mp4;+codecs="avc1.64001F,+mp4a.40.2")
44 – large (video/webm;+codecs="vp8.0,+vorbis")
35 – large (video/x-flv)
43 – medium (video/webm;+codecs="vp8.0,+vorbis")
34 – medium (video/x-flv)
18 – medium (video/mp4;+codecs="avc1.42001E,+mp4a.40.2")
5 – small (video/x-flv)
I've noticed that every Youtube video becomes available in the WebM
format after a while. The time before a video becomes available in WebM
varies between an hour or a week.

I'll add that Linterna Mágica extracts the WebM links and they are
available in the list/menu with HD links in Linterna Mágica. The
current stable version might not show proper name/text (WebM) for the
highest quality link in WebM format. This is fixed the repository and it
is available in the unstable svn builds at the site. For the moment
there is no way to automatically select WebM links for playback in
Linterna Mágica. There is an option to set preferred video quality that
might select and start WebM clips, by setting it to high quality
(usually WebM clips are at the top of the HD list).
I haven't noticed any problems with YouTube lately, but I am constantly
using the latest version from the repository. If you (all) find bugs,
don't hesitate to report them.

I have Linterna Magica installed in Abrowser. It works for most youtube
videos, but none of the videos on vimeo.com. When I try watching a
vimeo video, the linternamagica 'time' section just shows 'loading...'.
If I hit the link that says 'fs', I see a totem window that does
nothing. Besides Linternamagica, I have the adblock-plus extension
active. Disabling this extension does not help.

It is working for me with Abrowser 7.0.1 and Linterna Mágica 0.0.10-1.
It is also working with IceCat 3.6.16. File a bug report at Linterna
Mágica's bug tracker at Savannah. [1]
Add as much information as possible with your bug reports:
* Abrowser version,
* Linterna Magica version,
* Gnash or Lightspark version, if you have them installed,
* link(s) that do not load,
* enable debug messages [2] and add them to the bug report,
* add your configuration options, if you set anything different than
the defaults.

This usually happens when the link is invalid or Totem could not play
it. It must be a bug.

The 'fs' is the fullscreen button, and yes, if the extracted link is
invalid, you will see an empty Totem window. If you start your browser
from a terminal, I suspect you will see Totem complaining about
unreachable or invalid video link.

I doubt this add-on causes what you have described.
I'll examine the bugs and see if anything can be done.

Please don't send HTML-formatted messages to the mailing list. I and
maybe other people use text-based e-mail clients, and messages formated
in HTML are hard to read. Thunderbird should have an option to write
plain-text message instead.
Google is known to have their products in "beta" status for a while, but I am surprised this is considered beta (aka trial mode) still. Hasn't this option been around for a few years now? Why hasn't Google fully launched this yet and having their JavaScript autodetect or have code like Video For Everybody? http://bit.ly/BlxiB
