can you recommend a used 13 or 14inch notebook to buy? A notebook
which is a couple of years or older. Something
known to be durable. Thanks.

Any notebook until Ivy Bridge can be corebooted, and some newer ones without Boot Guard can be corebooted too. If you want some kind of "durability", then ThinkPads are still first choices.

The following 13/14-inch ThinkPad models are corebootable:

X301, T400/s, R400, T410/s, L41x, T420/s, L42x, X1, T430/s/u, L430, X1 Carbon (1st gen.), T431s, T440p, L440.

can you say which are flashed internally
and which externally?

Are the x1 computers the newest of
them?

Each of them must be flashed externally.

Only the first generation of X1 Carbon (Ivy Bridge, 3rd gen. Intel Core processors) can be corebooted. Any newer Carbon has Boot Guard.

I don't know about used options but If I were getting a 13-14" laptop I would pick the J3 from Think Penguin:

Pricy sure but they advertise support for Parabola and Trisquel 9.

Well, I really dislike the CPU (namely i5 10210U and i7 10510U). They are Comet Lake, not Ice Lake, and therefore lack many new instruction sets (e.g. AVX512, VAES, etc.). Given that Haswell (4th generation) can provide the very same instruction sets, why should one spend so much more money for basically nothing? (BTW, the even lower-end Amber Lake processors, such as i7 10510Y only supports SSE4.1, which is even poorer than the 1st generation Nehalem!)

However, if they have 11th generation Tiger Lake platforms, I'd like to have a look at them, of course, just to test the new instruction sets.
