Why did you switch (or use) Free Software?

I switched because of the freedom achieved, :) and being able to control to a greater extent what runs on my system.
Also, something that prompted me to switch was the 'iOSification' of OS X, starting with Mac OS X 10.7. I haven't liked Windows, for security reasons, as well as the [ridiculous amount of] DRM.

I'm a Mac user, but not a Mac OS X user, running only Trisquel on my Mac Mini.
Apple is currently dropping support for Macs that can run the latest version of OS X at such an alarming rate, a purchaser would have to buy a new Mac about every 3 years. (These are additional reasons, my decision wasn't purely pragmatic.)
