The Wi-Fi device works with free software (tested on another machine).
My PC is an ASUS KFSN4-DRE.

It's listed within lsusb as as Atheros AR9271.
But I have nothing in iwconfig nor in ifconfig -a.
I also tried lspci, ip a...
And I did a few reboots.

seems my PC "failed to load ath9k_htc".
I wanted to try a kernel update as well (jxself), but on this machine it doesn't display the key fingerprint so I didn't proceed.
Also I tried from a LiveCD, same issue.

Any ideas ?

Is the package named "open-ath9k-htc-firmware" installed?

This is the odd part:
on Trisquel's working PC, I have:
* open-ath9k-htc-firmware
* firmware-atheros
* firmware-carl9170

on another Trisquel that's not working with this Wi-Fi device, I have none of these installed.

On the Debian ASUS non working, I have installed "firmware-linux-free", which seems to fit the description of "firmware-carl9170". I installed and did a reboot, which didn't change a thing.
"open-ath9k-htc-firmware" is nowhere to be found on Debian.

[Interestingly, "firmware-atheros" is listed as non-free for Debian on the web (from Wheezy to Sid). It's installed by default with Gnome3 on Trisquel, though I suppose only the name is the same]

Ah: "open-ath9k-htc-firmware" is only available on Sid (and Buster).
So I'll move to Sid and see how it goes.

Many thanks Magic banana :)

Trisquel's main repository has atheros-firmware. Debian's non-free repository has firmware-atheros. They're different packages. Magic Banana is referring to open-ath9k-htc-firmware, which is the free replacement for firmware-atheros. If you would like to install open-ath9k-htc-firmware in a stable version of Debian you can build it via

https://wiki.debian.org/ath9k_htc/open_firmware

EDIT: It looks like open-ath9k-htc-firmware is not a complete replacement for firmware-atheros as it does not appear to include ar9170 and ath3k, but that isn't a problem for you since you only need ath9k_htc.

Thanks a lot mason.
Indeed, it was enough for my needs.
