Hi everyone

I bought a USB wireless device today for use with Trisquel:
http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-11_TL-WN821N.html

I checked while I was at the shop that the model I bought was listed in H-node as working with free code software (no blobs), it said yes:
https://h-node.org/wifi/view/en/266/Atheros-Communications-Inc-TP-Link-TL-WN821N-v3-1--Atheros-AR9002-/1/1/undef/undef/undef/undef/wifi-works/wn821n

The driver mentioned there seems to be already installed in Trisquel. Install command returned:
"open-ath9k-htc-firmware is already the newest version."

To cut a long story short, there's no sign that it's being detected or working at all.

I did just run an update that included a kernel install:
"The following NEW packages will be installed:
linux-headers-3.13.0-117 linux-headers-3.13.0-117-lowlatency
linux-image-3.13.0-117-lowlatency"

I will try a reboot and report back.

The chipset in that model may have changed... What is the output of the following command (to be executed in a terminal when the adapter is plugged)?
$ lsusb

Output of "sudo lsusb" is:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 2357:0107
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 009 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 007 Device 002: ID 04f2:0111 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd KU-9908 Keyboard
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 002: ID 0458:003a KYE Systems Corp. (Mouse Systems) NetScroll+ Mini Traveler / Genius NetScroll 120
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

I've tried rebooting, no joy. I've tried swapping the USB mouse and the USB wireless over, to make sure its not a bung plug.

No Wifi adapter here. If it was really plugged when you executed 'lsusb', then it suggests the hardware is defective.

I doubt you can find this WiFi adapter with the right versions in regular shops. Can you take a look on the back of your adapter and see if it's not v4 or v5? Only v1, v2 and v3 are compatible with free software and are not being produced for years now.

We at Technoethical have gone to great lengths to be able to offer the TET-N300 to free software users, buying each piece we could find from individuals in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria.

It says v5. How frustrating. I doubt this was written on the packet :{ I don't suppose there are any libre-friendly USB wifi devices that are usually available in normal computers shops?
