The Synaptic desktop launcher calls synaptic-pkexec, which on my system and others waits for authentication from the command line. Thus, executing the desktop file waits endlessly for authentication (or I suppose until timeout).
Perhaps use gksudo instead?
I solved this problem by changing my software source/ mirror by using the one from India.(ftp)
Just go to Main menu > system settings > software & update. In the 'Trisquel software' section select another mirror to see whether it works.
Changing mirrors is not a real solution. I use the main archive.trisquel.info mirror; all bugs should be fixed there first. This is a packaging issue, either by the maintainers for Trisquel or by upstream.
I can't recreate this on Trisquel 7.0 (I get a different problem). However, I can recreate it on Trisquel *Mini* 7.0. To fix the problem:
sudo aptitude install policykit-1-gnome policykit-desktop-privileges
Then go to Preferences -> Desktop Session Settings
In the dialog which opens under Automatically Started Applications enable 'PolicyKit Authentication Agent'
Then logout and login again.
If your problem _is_ with Trisquel 7.0 not Mini then post a transcript (minus any passwords) of running the command
synaptic-pkexec
From Terminal.
I'm reassigning this to mini, since it seems to work in regular version and apparently doesn't in mini. Here's one person saying it doesn't work in mini https://trisquel.info/en/forum/new-trisquel-linux-libre-kernel-and-free-software-ethic
Here's another person having this problem, on mini as well https://trisquel.info/en/forum/how-do-i-become-root-trisquel-mini

please consider an alternate solution for this as described in issue #15394 https://trisquel.info/en/issues/15394
Para abrir Synaptic en modo gráfico, hay que ejecutar la aplicación desde la terminal. Ingresar sudo synaptic y se abrirá la aplicación.
To open Synaptic in graphical way, it is necessary to execute the application from the terminal. To enter sudo synaptic and the application will be opened.
Always use gksudo with graphical applications, not sudo. (Sure, some apps will work with sudo but not all so it's best to always use gksudo.)
I had the same problem with mini 7.0. It fails silently. Launching with root privilege (gksudo or sudo) works find from the terminal.
Aklis's commit is in the repos. However, on testing I find it 'fix incomplete' and that policykit-desktop-privileges is also needed. New Merge Request
