Descripción

ttf-aenigma is a package with 465 TrueType fonts by Brian Kent.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install ttf-aenigma package.
  2. Go to the following path in the file system /usr/share/doc/ttf-aenigma/.
  3. Open any of the text files there.

Expected behaviour

After following the steps above you should find a license note in the text file
indicating that the font can be used according to a libre license,
compliant with the Guidelines for Free Software Distributions.

Unexpected behaviour (or what happens instead)

After following the steps above you find a disclaimer that reads:

DISCLAIMER
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
-The font(s) in this zip file were created by me (Brian Kent). All
of my Fonts are Freeware, you can use them any way you want to
(Personal use, Commercial use, or whatever).

-If you have a Font related site and would like to offer my fonts on
your site, go right ahead. All I ask is that you keep this text file
intact with the Font.

-You may not Sell or Distribute my Fonts for profit or alter the font
file(s) [.ttf .fon] in any way without asking me first. I can be
reached at:
aefonts[AT]frontiernet[DOT]net

(make sure you replace the [AT] and [DOT] with the proper characters) .

The text above indicates that ttf-aenigma fonts are not libre:

  1. The font(s) are "Freeware".
  2. You're not allowed to sell the fonts without Brian Kent's permission.
  3. You're not allowed to modify the font file(s) without Brian Kent's permission.

Looks like Ubuntu hosts this package in its universe repo ('community maintained open source software') which obviously isn't true either. Somebody should file a bug upstream as well.

Sam Geeraerts, current gNewSense maintainer, pointed me to a copyright file that shows a conversation with the copyright holder of aenigma fonts granting the necessary freedoms for using and redistributing them.

Still, the package needs to be updated.
