I have been using Ubuntu for a couple of years but I haven't done any serious poking around. I have been programming with proprietary software for over a decade but I want to move away from that now, learn new languages and contribute to the GNU Project.

I have only recently become aware of the GNU Project, but Richard Stallman's principles immediately struck a chord with me. I have always shared my code and written free tutorials for others to learn from. Although I learned programming via proprietary software it had a very open community on the internet who would happily share their code with each other and help each other to solve problems. This sharing environment was invaluable to me and I have sought to "pay it forward" in any way I can. I want to do the same with GNU, I will have to start at the bottom again and learn my way up but I'm glad to put in the effort for a good cause, and I'm sure I will become a better programmer for it.

Here's to freedom!
Cheers,
