Description

I want to install Thunderbird or Icedove as my primary MUA. My understanding is that Thunderbird is still non-free due to trademark and licensing issues on the name, hence the need for Icedove.

Clicking on System -> Administration -> Software & Updates doesn't launch any new window, so I use apt-get in the terminal to install Icedove, which is OK as an interim measure. I was expecting that if this had worked, however, that it would direct me to Icedove.

According to `apt-cache show thunderbird` and `apt-cache show icedove`, it seems that Thunderbird is preferred. The icedove package is marked transitional and simply depends on thunderbird. Therefore, Thunderbird is currently installed on my Trisquel 8 system. This is surprising and confusing, as I expected Icedove to be the preferred option from this family of MUAs.

It opens for me.

Why not recommend Thunderbird? As explained in our Free Software Definition, all four freedoms must be available on both a commercial and non-commercial basis. Mozilla's trademark policy serves to limit Freedom 2 to gratis distribution only, making the software nonfree.

Debian got special permission to use the trade name Thunderbird and their logo with the thunderbird package in the Debian repo which means that it's still nonfree.

thunderbird is not packaged in Trisquel 8.

$ sudo apt-get update && apt-cache show thunderbird
...
N: Can't select versions from package 'thunderbird' as it is purely virtual
N: No packages found
