Description

After doing a successful clean install and update/upgrade/dist-upgrade to latest default files, I restarted my pc and logged back in. Being the deviant I am I then decided I wanted to install the latest and greatest HWE kernel from the default Trisquel repo (not jxself's repo).

I did this via the 'sudo apt-get install linux-virtual-hwe-8.0' command and thus it auto-selects all the right stuff for me.

I do another update/upgrade command followed by apt cleaning commands to remove the old unneeded packages for me. I then reboot as usual for a kernel change.

Upon restart I notice something is off when the loading screen gives me network fail errors. When I log in, I notice that none of the network interfaces are being recognized. I had two already connect prior to the reboot: an ethernet port/cord and a tp-link pcie card (both with libre firmware/drivers). Since neither of those were being recognized, I plug-in my surefire USB Wireless N adapter from thinkpenguin, and nothing happens. It wasn't recognized either.

So I run the 'sudo lspci -v' command, and all the devices/ports are there. They just aren't being recognized by the OS/kernel. By the way, I tried restarting the network-manager service plenty of times as well b/c sometimes that works in these situations but to no avail.

Clearly there is a crippling bug in the HWE kernel if even the thinkpenguin adapter didn't work. It also killed my graphics card compatibility as well so the bug might be little more far reaching than just the networking firmware/drivers but don't get hung up on that. It is not a radeon/nouveau issue. It is a kernel problem.

I've since done another fresh install of Trisquel-mini 8 and will be sticking with the well-working 4.4 kernel until this is resolved. Hopefully I was descriptive enough that you can reproduce and fix the issue.
Also, hurry up and add a version 8 to the issue creator.

Let's just make certain - you installed a kernel for virtual machines on real hardware and it didn't work? I think you can guess the answer to that one...

As in kernels for virtual machines are not supposed to be run on real hardware because they have a restricted number of device drivers.

I guess I did. Funny how the description of that package doesn't mention virtual machines at all. Regardless, it installs the some of the regular generic kernel packages as well as part of the dependencies.

But 'oh well'. The install for linux-generic-hwe-8.0 is also broken so it isn't like there is a right choice in the Trisquel repos to be able to install the hwe kernel.

So the result is the same for me, I'm stuck with the 4.4 kernel for now. I won't use an external repo (jxself's) for the kernel. Glad we could have this enlightening discussion. I finally learned what the "virtual" naming means and that the problem with the trisquel hwe kernel can't/won't be fixed.

Now I just have to figure out how to fix the wifi interface of Trisquel-mini 8, because that is also broken :)
Please do work on adding the 8.0 version to issue reporter. It is very clear that we will need it.

The fact there is no HWE kernel as yet is a separate issue. Postponing until the next Dev's meeting.

Trisquel and Trisquel Mini won't work with non-free 'blob' WiFi cards, which may be your problem. Ask on the forum for supppliers of compatible WiFi dongles, Thinkpenguin is one, but there is another.

Testing further a

sudo aptitude install linux-generic-hwe-8.0

Complains, but if you follow the default answers installs the actual 4.13 kernel image and headers as dependencies anyway. Please try this with your machine.

A patch has already been coded for the non-free microcode dependencies blocking install. Awaiting confirmation by user(s) as to when it is in the repos.

Not sure why are you still replying to this bug, I abandoned it after you closed it. There is nothing wrong with my wifi adapter, it is the fsf-certified adapter here: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb .

The issue is with the ath9k driver not being supported for some damnable reason. Pretty sure it's not the interface anymore since I've tried doing it via the terminal as well. But yeah off-topic, just annoyed and wanted to shove that suggestion back down the dark hole it came from. I've already switch to Jason Self's repo to get the new kernel but it doesn't fix the wifi problems so you have bigger issues to tackle than this minor problem. Unless you connect via ethernet cable, Trisquel mini 8 is worthless (to me at least, a wifi-only desktop user). So my Trisquel box will go unused until then. I wish I'd never updated from 7. Bye.
