Install TOR Browser

Hi, I'm new on Trisquel and GNU/Linux, so please take it into account... thank you!

There is a thread named "Prolems with the TOR Browser" where the same problem I have is described. But it seems like closed, I could not add a post, that's why I am starting a new one.

https://trisquel.info/en/forum/prolems-tor-browser

The thing is that, when I had MS Windows, it was easy to have TOR installed with the Tor Bundle, which easily installed Vidalia and The Tor Browser (especially configured for TOR). But for Trisquel, both the torproject.org and Trisquel.info reads that it is better to follow their especial instructions to install TOR at:

https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en
http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/tor
https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian-vidalia.html.en

I did, and I managed to make Vidalia work (although many times does not want to run because it says it is already running). But the main problem I have is that I do not know where the TOR Browser is or how to get it.
1. Have I installed it yet?
2. Or do I have to configure my Abrowser -or another browser- for TOR browsing?
3. And why is it recommended in the mentioned thread ("Prolems with the TOR Browser") to install a TOR Bundle when both torproject.org and trisquel.info do not?

Unfortunately I do not know what Antarta -from the mentioned thread- finally did to have a Browser working with TOR.

4. And, do you know why my Vidalia too often cannot be open and says it is already running? I manage to kill the process but makes no difference, I have to reboot the computer to make it work.

Thanks a lot

Download the latest Tor browser:
https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en
(click on Gnu/Linux; download appropriate 32 or 64 bit version + signature; MacOS instructions work for checking signature (click 'What's This?'))

Right click on the archive and 'extract here'

Right click on the Tor browser folder and 'open in terminal'

Type: 'sh start-tor-browser' (no quotes) on the command line

and you are good to go!

Caveat: I've encountered issues with running Tor browser from time to time in that the browser won't open. Closing the terminal window and trying again works most of the time. Occasionally, after 3-4 tries, I will be forced to open in safe mode. Saving the bookmarks in a separate file and extracting the folder again (import the bookmarks) will get you going again. I've reported the issue (since the past 3-4 versions of the browser), but it still happens.

Having said that, I use Tor browser almost exclusively. Works great! (most of the time)

Note: Vidalia is not accessible via the browser bundle (as far as I can tell) if you are interested in running a relay.

Note that if you are using a GUI file manager, it's easier to simply double click on start-tor-browser.

That works too. Funny thing is that never occurred to me. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. :)

Even better: use the "Main menu" utility (you can find it in the "System settings"), create a "New item" and specify the path to "start-tor-browser" as the "Command").

Hello. New GNU user

I downloaded Tor Browser (but it didn't actually say "32 bit" just "Tor for GNU/Linux" - the other said "64 bit").

I'm now lost immediately: where exactly do I find the "extract here" option in the archive?

(I've never extracted anything before.)

Thank you for the help.

Open it with an archive manager and you should then be able to extract it (it's the same thing as unzipping,by the way).

Thank you all, very much. Clear explanations. Haven't had time yet to give it a go but I guess I will tonight.

But, if that easy way at https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en#linux works, why torproject.org and trisquel.info recommends for Debian/Ubuntu/Trisquel the alternative installation I tried?
https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en
http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/tor
https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian-vidalia.html.en

And, if I want go now for that easy solution at
https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en#linux
Do I have to first undo or uninstall anything of what I did?
If so, how do I do that?

I think you're misunderstanding. Those links you mention tell you how to install Tor. The Tor Browser Bundle is a web browser bundled with and configured to use Tor. For example, the Tor Browser Bundle doesn't include an email client connected via Tor, or a feed reader connected via Tor. To get either of those, you would need to manually install Tor and configure those programs to route their traffic through it, and hence, you would need to follow those instructions you mention. But generally, people just want a web browser, and since you can easily screw up your anonymity if you don't know what you're doing, it's usually better to just use the Tor Browser Bundle if all you need is a web browser.

Thanks. Now I am trying to download the Tor Browser from
https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en
as you recommended, but when I try to get
https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrowser/3.6.4/tor-browser-linux64-3.6.4_en-US.tar.xz
I just get a page from the Apache Server saying "Not found". They seem to have a problem now.

So I'll try later. But I still have the same question: If I just should download the easy solution and not pay attention to

https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en
http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/tor
https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian-vidalia.html.en

Do I have to uninistall anything of what I have now before going for the easy solution? I followed the instructions on those three links for my Trisquel 6.0.1.
