Brightness adjustment

My boyfriend has a Thinkpad T480s with Trisquel 12 MATE. There are keys to adjust the brightness but they are always recognized as function keys (F5 and F6) and have no effect on brightness. On the Fn Lock Escape key, there is a light on, I tried pressing Fn and that key, or that key alone, or Fn alone, and with F6, no effect on brightness.
I installed brightnessctl, it shows that the brightness is 100% when the laptop is connected to power and 50% when it is not. In the MATE energy settings, there is a slider for brightness adjustment but when it is at 100% when the laptop is not connected to power, the brightness is 50% anyway as showed by brightnessctl.
Is there a way, with a graphical interface, to adjust the brightness over 50% when the laptop is not connected to power?
In dconf or through gsettings, set brightness-dim-battery to a different (higher) value in org.mate.power-manager.
Then you should be able to adjust brightness up to that value in MATE energy settings.
