Progress on free code virtual reality software

A couple of years back, a comment was made here that "VR is just a passing fad" and developing free code software for it was a waste of time:

Around the same time that comment was written, VR was already being used as part of deliberative democracy processes in Taiwan, which were leading to legislation being passed by the Taiwanese government:

I wonder if anyone knows of other free code projects that are making use of VR technology and developing reusable code components for it?
