I upgraded from 3.0 to 3.5 & 2 days later the login screen went blank, with no way of even rebooting the machine without removing the laptop battery. I've subsequently had to download the ISO & reinstall to fix the problem.

That is an odd bug, indeed.

I've upgraded from 3.0 to 3.5 and never had this problem...

No issue in a update from 3.0 --> 3.5 Do you have more information?
