Beschreibung

a guy i know and i both recently received trisquel dwyn usb cards, and i'm trying to install emacs23.

i'm not sure it will remain installed (on the card) but that's not the issue, i tried adding to sources.list and was still unable to install anything later than emacs22. is there any way to do emacs23 on dwyn?

It will be available in the incoming new version (trisquel 3.5).

In the meantime, you can install it manually, read this piece of irc log about it:

2010-02-16 02:42:56 pieterc Any idea how I install emacs 23 on my FSF membership trisquel -card?
2010-02-16 02:54:08 quidam pieterc: you can install it as emacs-snapshot, I think
2010-02-16 02:54:48 quidam pieterc: also, you can use this ppa: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-elisp/ubuntu jaunty main
2010-02-16 02:56:13 quidam I'm not sure if the card has full system persistence or just for the home partition
2010-02-16 02:56:29 quidam you can tune that up anyway
2010-02-16 02:56:37 pieterc tested that - only home dir
2010-02-16 02:56:46 pieterc *sigh* ;)
2010-02-16 02:57:41 quidam pieterc: it is the default as it is safer, but you can change it by changing the label of the home partition
2010-02-16 02:58:03 quidam now it is home-rw, right?
2010-02-16 02:58:08 pieterc yes indeed
2010-02-16 02:58:29 quidam then you can relabel it to casper-rw, that will do the trick
2010-02-16 02:58:47 pieterc then my entire root will be copied on that partition?
2010-02-16 02:59:02 quidam no, just the files you add or modify
2010-02-16 02:59:08 pieterc ok, cool
2010-02-16 03:01:08 quidam pieterc: emacs23 is in the incoming version repos
2010-02-16 03:01:39 quidam pieterc: as soon as it is finished, we will also release an update for the card
2010-02-16 03:01:43 pieterc sudo apt-get dist-upgrade when relabeled should be ok?
2010-02-16 03:01:47 pieterc ah ok
2010-02-16 03:01:51 pieterc great!
2010-02-16 03:02:32 pieterc I'll need a reboot I'm afraid - accidentally removed the card and now it doesn't recognise it as my root system anymore
2010-02-16 03:02:35 quidam pieterc: I recommend you to do as less changes as possible to the card using persistence
2010-02-16 03:02:51 quidam so, no dist-upgrade
2010-02-16 03:03:19 quidam otherwise the kernel will be updated and it might break things
2010-02-16 03:03:20 pieterc because the casper-rw partition is too small?
2010-02-16 03:03:25 pieterc ah ok
2010-02-16 03:03:26 pieterc alright
2010-02-16 03:03:37 quidam no, because it is a glorified live-cd, with some limitations
2010-02-16 03:03:48 pieterc ok
2010-02-16 03:03:59 quidam that is why the default setting is home-rw
2010-02-16 03:04:05 pieterc I'll reboot now and relabel the partition
2010-02-16 03:04:10 quidam it is safer that way
2010-02-16 03:04:15 pieterc right :)
2010-02-16 03:04:22 pieterc I don't like safe ;-)
2010-02-16 03:04:35 quidam ok, do not relabel it while in a live session
2010-02-16 03:04:35 pieterc I meant, I like to take a risk
2010-02-16 03:04:53 pieterc yes, I was planning on rebooting into my normal system ;)
2010-02-16 03:04:54 quidam oh, the card is very easy to rebuild if you mess it up
2010-02-16 03:05:11 pieterc with the DVD and use the create bootkey thing?
2010-02-16 03:05:31 pieterc USB startup disk creator;)
2010-02-16 03:05:44 quidam the dvd is the source code
2010-02-16 03:05:59 pieterc ok
2010-02-16 03:06:01 quidam to rebuild the card you can use this image: http://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel_3.0-FSF-3_i686.iso
2010-02-16 03:06:12 quidam and this script: http://devel.trisquel.info/live-usb-fsf.sh
2010-02-16 03:07:23 pieterc thanks
2010-02-16 03:07:24 pieterc got that
2010-02-16 03:07:30 pieterc thanks for your explanations
2010-02-16 03:07:37 pieterc will reboot now into normal system
2010-02-16 03:07:46 quidam ok, see you
2010-02-16 03:07:51 pieterc bye

If someone has the time please make a wiki entry with this. As the package is already in the upcoming repos I'm colosing this.
