The Realtek RTL8188CE network card requires non-free software and therefore does not work on my laptop. It is certainly a shame that I cannot use 100% free software on that computer. I think that the RTL8188CE uses a non-free LKM (Linux Kernel Module), that can possibly be rewritten as free software. Is anybody interested in this?
The problem is not the kernel module but the firmware. Reverse engineering binary firmware is non-trivial. A common thing to do is replace the WiFi card with one that respects your freedom. This can be done via internal or external WiFi devices.
