Revision of Hardware Type and Software Freedom from Mon, 02/17/2014 - 02:42

The revisions let you track differences between multiple versions of a post.

Every piece of hardware falls into one of three categories:

a) freedom-respecting

b) freedom-compatible

c) proprietary

a) freedom-respecting hardware

Freedom-respecting hardware works with free software, and does not require proprietary software. This applies to drivers (and?).

Example: MIPS processors

b) freedom-compatible hardware

Freedom-compatible hardware works with free software.

Example: x86 processors are merely freedom-compatible.

c) proprietary hardware

Proprietary hardware will only work with proprietary software.

Example: ___ video card
