Isn't there a better free and open source application for Trisquel Forums?

This forum runs on pretty basic code. Isn't there something a bit more sophisticated that we could use, to allow more functionality?

What features are you missing? Open source misses the point.

For example, login using OpenID. Being able to have a signature. Smileys. Buttons to click on to add an html link. That sort of stuff. It is all available on the Ubuntu forums application.

Oh, and thanks for the link lembas! I guess free software is of course open source!

Some of the things you mention -- like OpenID, signatures, WYSIWYG
buttons -- are readily available for the content management system used
here. Smiley support is partially integrated in the sense that it can
detect certain emoticons and replace them with icons. However, it does
not properly integrate with the WYSIWYG toolbar (there are user
submitted patched but I don't know how well they work).

As mentioned, if you think these are really needed, file a "feature
request" against the "Web" Project:
https://trisquel.info/en/node/add/project-issue

However, there might be some issues because this forum is synced with a
mailing list. I don't know for sure, but this will have to be tested and
since quidam is the only one working on the website I doubt any
non-essential feature requests will be attended to if there are more
important things to do.

I prefer a nice, clean forum. Why do I need to see a pic of the poster,
and know how many cups of Ubuntu, and which roast she's had on the day
of posting ?

Ubuntu forums were running a proprietary application the last time I looked. Many free software forums do offer those features as well. The Trisquel developers are overworked and seldomly wonder here, don't hold your breath while waiting for an answer. If you feel strongly about not having a feature, you could file a bug against the forums.

The problem is not the software. It's that the Trisquel project is actually pretty popular and there aren't that many developers or contributors able/willing to work on it.

As others pointed out the current developers are overworked. You can help fix that though by contributing financially. The goal we are shooting for right now is to get Rubén (lead developer) working on the project full time. He currently has another job.

I'm pretty sure we never met the goal of 100 associate members... but that's one significant and direct means of helping and still something we should be shooting for. Just $10 USD a month means more than a one time donation of $100.. Not to mention for those on a budget it's certainly easier to handle.

Here are a number of ways you can help (financially) if you want to move things along. Here is a list:

Become an associate member:

and/or make a donation:

http://trisquel.info/en/donate

or buy something from the Trisquel store (t-shirts and things like that):

http://trisquel.info/en/store

or check out http://libre.thinkpenguin.com/ for hardware / case badges / discs and other stuff (25% of the profits go to the Trisquel project- not to mention it helps improve the amount of readily available hardware and the GNU/Linux ecosystem in general)

You are right, we have not met the goal of 100 members yet. I track the issue on the issue tracker. We have gained 2 members since posting but a few days ago quidam said he only gets about ~400 euros ($500) per month from membership. If you think about it that isn't all that much. That wouldn't even cover my rent. Also it isn't much considering minimum wage in spain (where quidam lives) 748.3 euros a month. So basically he is making less then minimum wage for doing an obviously technical and skilled job.

A future goal is to hire another paid dev but with only $500 coming in a month we aren't even really paying the ones we have enough.

But yes we are still shooting for 100.

It is sad that Trisquel's membership roster actually went down in the total number of members. It wasn't by a small amount either.

:(

We need to do more fund raising. 400 euros is definitely inconsequential. It would seem the donations are brining in more on a monthly basis than members though (although that is a guesstimate).

Considering what we are donating to other projects right now I think we (ThinkPenguin) could probably double the amount the membership program brings in alone.. but this isn't the time to do it... Reinvestment in money producing activities will move things further faster in the long term.

Maybe in a couple of months though!

You have to remember also that the forums are tied to the mailing
lists. Some of us never use the forum; I am currently replying to this
by email. The "basic" structure you describe is probably due to the fact
that the data back-end is basic: a list of email threads.

I'm going to start a new post since this one got off-topic a bit about raising funds for Trisquel.
