I know google is not the best option for an email service, and I was wondering, what options do i have that you recommend as trisquel users that care about free software - as in freedoom of speech

FSF has a page on mail service providers.

https://www.fsf.org/resources/webmail-systems

Riseup.net is good as far as I know but requires an invitation if you can't convince them you're a journalist or an activist. They don't just take anybody.

I use Unseen.is they seem to be geared towards privacy, also based in Iceland which is supposed to have more strict privacy laws.

My god, thats incredible.

That kind of news always make me wonder how diferent is the Internet in Europe or the United States, here no one cares about Tor or VPN's.
You should see the amount of piracy you have acces to in México.
The sad part is that it really hurts free software, almost in every corner there is someone who sells pirate music or movies, and for as little as 5 dollars they "clean" your pc and install windows, office and all that shit.

ha! I do that for 50 euros, that is if you are not a friend and if you insist on it after I explained you why GNU is better for you. If a friend wants me to do that job I simply refuse.

The headline of that news is "Security is Not a Crime—Unless
You're an Anarchist". So, it's not "Extreme security robustness can
land you in jail in Spain" but rather "Extreme security robustness AND
being member of an organization that sets bombs in ATM machines can
land you in jail in Spain".

There's no law against using secure mail in Spain, but in spite
of that the judge of that case chose to consider the use of it as one
of the grounds for temporary prison for some of the detainees. This
has only happened once as far as I know, and I think it to be the kind
of mistake that can be reversed by an upper court. Still sad anyway.

I'd shoot for Openmailbox-- it's just a nice, polished service dedicated to privacy and Free Software.
They even offer an ownCloud instance, which is really convenient.

Benjamin Mako Hill has an interesting thing to say.

https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/google-has-most-of-my-email-because-it-has-all-of-yours

"Despite the fact that I spend hundreds of dollars a year and hours of work to host my own email server, Google has about half of my personal email!"

It doesn't matter how secure your mail service is. All it takes is to have correspondence with everybody else out there who only use Gmail unencrypted.

I know it is sad. But the change has to start with little :) and it becomes bigger and bigger

Which means... when speaking of secure communication, it doesn't
suffice to take care of oneself. The Lone Ranger individualist
approach does not work. Having a secure computer and secure e-mail
service is no guarantee at all, because of the other end of
communication still being vulnerable. If you want your communications
to be secure, you need your correspondents to use secure technology
too. We need to keep raising awareness about it, as much frustrating
as it can be.

In a century where privacy gets one setback after another,
there's some hope though: the recent end-to-end encryption from
WhatsApp was a huge advance. I used to recommend Telegram, but now
WhatsApp is even better. Encryption is always on instead of being a
choice, so you stop depending on your correspondents to choose it.
This is the way to go.

Contrary to Telegram, WhatsApp's client is proprietary software. You cannot even know what it really does. You have to blindly trust its owner. Facebook in this case. And blindly trusting Facebook to respect our privacy is, well, no very reasonable!

When searching for answers for the same question I ended up with Kolabnow.com. They are amongst the few services that are endorsed time and again by privacy and security techies. They're on the fsf list as well.

They have a web client that works pretty - I always use it with IceDove though.

But support free speech but not free beers!

I preferred countermail.com

They use diskless servers, are not located in USA, message are encrpted, they do not log your IP address and the strip the header on the emails.I also use startmail but I like countermail better.
