Additional Drivers

I just got Trisquel, but I can't get my wifi to work. Is there anything like Additional Drivers jockey (Kubuntu) to install my wifi driver?
Jockey has been removed from Trisquel because it helps users install non-free software. If your wifi card isn't working off the bat it is unlikely it will work out of the box without non-free software which we can not recommend. We also can not recommend software that has the purpose of downloading non-free software.
You have a couple options:
1) Check h-node's (hardware database) list of wifi cards that work with all free software.
2) Check out think penguin for a free software compatible card (see the link on the right side of the website). If you buy a card through the link on this website 10% of the profits are donated to the Trisquel project. Contact user "chris" for more information as he runs thinkpenguin.
Thank you for your help "Sirgrant", I am going to go download Jockey.
"Sorry FSF".
The "jockey" method won't solve anything if the repositories don't have the drivers available in most of the cases :S...
The better way is for you would be to see the reference of the Wifi Card and try to find a method to install the drivers since we can't provide help for non-free software here.
Wish you good luck with this problem and hope you understand this position.
Kubuntu supports it.
Is there a way I can cancle my Trisquel-forums account. I think I am going to look for a different OS to play with. Does anyone have a good recomendation?
I am running Kubuntu 12.10 now and loving it.
Why do I need to sign a CAPTCHA evey time I post something?
People on this forum will only recommend distros that comply with the GNU project's guidelines for free systems. Here is a list of free GNU/Linux distros.
We can't endorse (k)ubuntu for the following reasons.
If you don't want your trisquel account you can simply just stop using it. If you are absolutely intent on having it deleted I can contact someone to do that for you. You need a captcha every time you post because you are a new user and we have had issues with spammers.
This is an interesting question. Only new users have the CAPTCHA ? Then after how much time do new users stop having it :s... ? I am asking this because I already posted a lot of content and I'm still a little bit pieced off about the CAPTCHA (and this even knowing that I totally respect the choice of us, and the idea behind it). Just to know :D
Robtygart: There are many reasons to avoid non-free drivers/firmware. Your going to run into problems at some point down the road. The people here are really trying to help. They are doing you a favor by pointing you to places that will help you to move away from these issues.
There are lots of issues with non-free software both technical and ethical. If you don't care it is still a smart move to get away from the non-free components. It's one thing everybody agrees on. Non-free software is not ideal. This includes those distributions which include it.
Well, I have a common problem. I have a laptop with wifi card (Broadcom Corporation BCM43227), which is not supported by free drivers. I have no other choice and I had to install non-free drivers. I've been using the GNU/Linux Trisquel for 2 years and unfortunately I was forced to move to Debian with non-free drivers.
Hope there will be a free drivers in future, because I feel very bad using non-free software - I am just forced to use it...

Is it a new pc? Maybe spend some extra cash on a compatible wireless card? That will ease your concience.
This is a very common problem and sometimes people don't have the money to buy another Wireless Card (as an example). I had the same problem but I had the chance to own a Realtek Wireless Card from an MSI Netbook that was compatible so I switched to my new laptop, but I know that not everyone has this chance.
Now it is true that, even if it is not ideal, it is better to only use that piece of software non-free instead of using a full non-free OS just to use that part. But it is also true that help can't be provided here.
Even Mr. RMS told about Steam that, even if he doesn't agree with the software itself and won't recommend his use since it is non-free software, a part of him is "happy" because he knows that a lot of people will now use Gnu/Linux Distributions, and because of that, start using a lot more Free Software (hopping that they get the interest of learning about the movement and the idea).
So (and this is just a silly idea), a special place in the forum just for cases like this one could be good, even if it isn't ideal, at least people that only have 1 piece of hardware without solution could still use Trisquel GNU/Linux until they have the money/time/etc... to replace it. (Just an idea).
PS: If you want to find a replacement here is a very good and specialize website that you maybe already know thinkpenguin.com
It would be great if we could come up with a solution to solve this problem for those whom it is a significant hardship for. I don't know how to distinguish those who say they can't afford it from those who really can't afford it.
I am wondering whether the following implication is true:
If a driver from linuxwireless.org is not available in Trisquel then it includes non-free software.
I once got a chipset work with a driver downloaded from there just to find out later that this particular driver was non-free, so I finally sent the hardware back. Anyway, as aliasbody mentioned, I think it harms less to install one non-free driver compared to installing a non-free OS, and very often, the wireless card is the only critical component.
A driver might not yet be included in Trisquel if it's new. Perhaps also not if it supports very rare hardware or if the driver is technically of extremely poor quality. So I don't think that's so simple. One has to dive into the licensing details and watch out because it could be a mess.
I can understand why people would think that just one little proprietary blob doesn't matter but it's a slippery slope.
The AR9170/CARL9170 firmware wasn't included for a while. Nor has the nouveau driver been included until recently. There are probably not that many drivers/firmware pieces missing. Free software ends up getting supported much better than the non-free stuff. It gets included in the mainline kernel and/or other major free driver projects.
