anonymox and Linterna Magica

Hello everyone,

Linterna Magica on Scriptish (or Greasemonkey) works wonders on Firefox (am using Firefox beta 8 because Mozilla needs GNU/Linux Beta and Aurora users).

However, if I add Anonymox (as a much lighter alternative to Tor), I can't see any videos on YouTube or Vimeo. Linterna Magica displays its frame but the video never loads.

With Downloadhelper, I can download the invisible video.

Can anyone help?

I'm the developer of Linterna Mágica. Make a bug report [1] with as
much information as possible - example broken links, Anonymox home page,
turn on debug messages [2] in Linterna Mágica and add the output to the
bug report. I'll see what I can do.

Many thanks, ivaylo, for your kind reply. As I'm able to download the invisible video, perhaps it's just that anonymox slows things enough for the video to be unable to load.

I'll try and send the report.

Hello again,

In fact, I set debug to 2 then to 5. I can see the debug bar (just a bar) on the page but then it disappears, so I suppose it has nothing to say to me.

Anonymox 0.9.3: Firefox add-on http://www.anonymox.net/en

I disabled anonymox and Linterna Magica works fine again. I'd better send a bug report on their forum.

Here's an image of what I get with anonymox on. Edit: the attachment doesn't seem to work. Sorry.

I'd better go over to the Linterna Magica forum.

Uhm?! I'm not sure what to say. There should be two buttons on the bar
"close" and "show/hide". When the page is zoomed too much they could
disappear. You could also config debug messages to be printed in the
browser console, but without the Firebug extension I am not sure if they
are printed properly.

I think it is still unclear where the is bug, but OK.

Linterna Mágica is hosted entirely at Savannah, a service for *free
software* projects. The mailing list included. You don't need (and never
will) an account in any Google service. Savannah servers are maintained
by the GNU project/FSF.

After reading this paragraph few time, I've figured it out. The bar that
disappears is for pages that do not render the Linterna Mágica player
(or frame as you've put it). When a player is rendered, the debug box is
available trough the main interface. At the top near the "Linterna
Mágica" logo/about button you should see another icon that looks like a
bug. Clicking it will show the debug messages where the video is
normally rendered.

It seems to me that Anonymox is not free software. There is no
information about license or source code at the website. There is a
README_and_LICENSE.txt file in the XPI (the extension package). Here is
the most interesting part of it (quoted):

"(All rights reserved)
(Use at your own risk)

This is the uncommented version of the code.
If you want to know how it works or if you want to have more readable
source, just contact me :-)"

Every JavaScript file is obfuscated/minimized (not the real source code)
and has the same header as the quote from the README_and_LICENSE.txt. If
you value your freedom you should not use this software. You could write
to the author to investigate why he distributes the software his way and
is he willing to release it as free software.

For those who don't know about Linterna Magica, it's so great: have a look at https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/play-videos-without-using-flash

While I wasn't able to watch a video with anonymox on, yet I was able to download it using the the «save the video clip» on the left-hand upper corner of Linterna Magica window (or box, or interface?).

The video is named videoplayback by default, without any extension and I was able to open it using Totem. Impressive.

What's the format, though? WebM?

It seems I'll be able to uninstall the Downloadhelper add-on.

Congratulations on this fabulous script!

I wrote an article in French about it and I'll have to add a paragraph about the download button.

==== Hurray
A little later: choosing the highest quality — 845x WebM-vorbis — and then clicking on the "save" button opens an html5 page in Firefox and I can see the video.

Magical, isn't it?

Right click on the video and you can download it, naming it as you like — no extension required.

I'll wait till ivaylo makes fun of me being so dumb, and close the bug report on https://savannah.nongnu.org/support/index.php?107861

You can also try the free UnPlug plugin as an alternative to the non-free Downloadhelper.

Many thanks, aloniv, for the suggestion. I'll try Unplug tomorow. I suspected there was something not exactly free in Downloadhelper. Do you mean the code is not open?

All clips that Linterna Mágica is able to play could be saved. The only
exception are the RTSP links in livestream dot com, because the browser
can't handle the scheme.

>
> What's the format, though? WebM?

Depends. In YouTube it will be the format that is currently selected in
the HD links list. With default configuration the lowest quality clip is
selected which usually is FLV. Check the HD list for the selected link
and you will see the video format. Another option is to use the file
command in a terminal:

$ file some_unknown_file

$ file /tmp/videoplayback

> Congratulations on this fabulous script!

Thanks.

> A little later: choosing the highest quality — 845x WebM-vorbis — and

The interface/buttons are not documented because I think they speak for
themselves, but what you discovered might be unknown. When a HD link is
selected, the "save" button link is changed and it refers to the
selected link. Opening this within the browser, renders the plugin that
handles the file type.

> Magical, isn't it?

Yep, little elves, gnome and imps do the work underneath the
interface. ;)

> Right click on the video and you can download it, naming it as you like —

Yes, that was the purpose of the "save" button from the beginning.

> I'll wait till ivaylo makes fun of me being so dumb,

I see no reason to do so. Everyone makes mistakes.

> and close the bug report

I'll investigate the issue before that. It is unclear why the player
does not load and that is not normal behaviour.

I think the player doesn't load always because my connection may be slow and anonymox makes it a wee bit slower, though not as slow as Tor would.

I've experimented farther on Blib.tv this time. Pity they enable free licenses for your uploads but don't use WebM. And another website (showing webseries) and there the player worked fine (MP4 as well).

Well, Linterna Magica is full of surprises, you can never get bored using it :-)

I was able to make it work few months ago. Live Stream support was
introduced in the current stable version (0.0.10/0.0.10-1). As far as I
remember some streams/channels were still problematic. Does changing the
link from the HD links list changes this? If not, feel free to send a
bug report with the link(s) that do not load.

i downloaded the last nightly, so i'll test on livestream when I get home. I really like the script, since i have the same player for all video sites. Could you make it play webm video when available? Most YouTube videos have webm copies available, and I know this because of KeepVid.com.

Yes, that is true, most YouTube videos are being converted to WebM. When
I was implementing the quality config option I've investigated something
similar to what you want, but decided it was too complicated and
confusing. With the current implementation, WebM could be (kind of)
selected if you set the value of "quality" to, let's say above 50% or
high. So far, WebM links were always in the top of the list - highest
quality. This of course is not the best solution.

Implementing preferred video format as separate option or as improvement
to the quality option, might create confusion. For example, extracted
links are: three flv, two mpg and one WebM, quality is set to medium and
preferred format to WebM. What should be selected automatically, if
medium (size and resolution) links are one flv and one mpg? Another way
is quality to select links in the preferred format. If such format is
missing, a fallback to one of the available formats. Of course such
implementation will support flv and mpg as preferred formats. I'd be
happy to hear other users comments on such option. Anybody else
interested? I'd like to hear about the preferred behaviour (as described
above, or yet another way) for format vs quality options.

I think selecting Webm myself is no big deal but perhaps the default could be large or medium Webm as available. I think the biggest size or resolution is best. Anyway on very old computers (PII) you can't even watch webm or any video format on line, no matter what.

Users with slow connection or older computers will think differently. ;)
My opinion is that the lowest quality is the sane default.

If you install the "Linterna Mágica user config" [1] script you can set
your preferences and they will be preserved when you install newer
versions of Linterna Mágica. This way you could set the quality [2] to
"high" or medium or whatever supported.

Hm, even with caching and 320x240? Until relative recently my main
computer was 8 years old with Duron CPU at 800Mhz. Worked almost
perfectly for a lot of things. Well, 720p was not an option. Depends
what you consider old and slow.

I'll reconsider the selection of preferred quality/HD links by format or
keyword. If I think of an easy way to be used and implemented I might do
it. Care to fill in a bug report / feature request?

P.S. I'm starting to CC the mailing list linterna-magica-users at nongnu
dot org, when replying to Linterna Mágica threads. If you are replying
to me on such threads via e-mail, please keep it. Or even better start
adding it. There are only few people on the list, excluding myself, that
are probably on this list too, but still.

I don't know how you do caching, I'm afraid. What I call old is a PII 400MHZ or a Celeron 1000MHZ running Slitaz and unable to display more than the first frame of a small video on youtube such as this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGMHSbcd_qI#

But maybe I should have tried with Midori rather than Firefox.

Duron 800MHZ can do a lot more with a new video card and 512Mo Ram. We have one like that. Great computer. I added a more powerful Athlon.

Have to rush now

Hello,

This is just to say that Linterna Magica doesn't seem to work anymore. I tried it on Vimeo and Dailymotion and blibtv, running Firefox beta 12, Iceweasel testing (Firefox 10), and Firefox 11 in Lubuntu.

Is it because I use it with Scriptish instead of Greasemonkey? Yet it used to work fine with Scriptish unless I remember wrongly.

I still have to see how it goes on Trisquel 5 Gnome.

I'm willing to send a report on the nongnu page but I'd like to check if I'm not just stupid.

I went to the test page: http://linterna-magica.nongnu.org/plugins-test-page.html
I can see the levitating gnu for a couple of seconds in flv or in mpg4 if I click on the play button.

Then I can read all the texts and finally "Detected plugins" says:
Flash Video (video/flv)

mplayerplug-in is now gecko-mediaplayer 1.0.5
Gecko Media Player 1.0.5Video Player Plug-in for QuickTime, RealPlayer and Windows Media Player streams using MPlayer

MPEG 4 Video (video/mp4)

mplayerplug-in is now gecko-mediaplayer 1.0.5
Gecko Media Player 1.0.5Video Player Plug-in for QuickTime, RealPlayer and Windows Media Player streams using MPlayer

It is always a good idea to spam me, the bug tracker [1] and the
linterna-magica-users at nongnu dot org mailing list. This will ensure
bug fixing and improvements. I would love it if everyone reported bugs
in the tracker [1] even if they turned out to be invalid. Especially
lately when I have little spare time and reading bug reports from
different sources (Trisquel mailing list/forum, the identi.ca group
etc.) requires me to make the bug report or fix the issue without making
one. Issues mentioned on such sources are hard to track and sometimes
they might not be noticed - using delete all when there is a lot of
unread mail from mailing lists.

Linterna Mágica is definitely working in Abrowser (practically Firefox)
11 and Greasemonkey in the websites mentioned by you. It seems there is
a problem with the code that injects Linterna Mágica in the page with
Scriptish 0.1.7 and Abrowser 11. Please report this as bug.

There's a big difference with Firefox 12 (beta) in Trisquel 5 Gnome with
VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 2.32.0) enabled.

(yet not available in Debian Testing - I'll see if I can install the sid version.

I can see all the Linterna Magica frames and the content on Linterna Magica test page.

I can download vimeo mp4 so it's all right. I'll try Linterna on other video website that don't offer WebM. Works fine on Blip.tv.

Can't make Linterna work in Lubuntu (LXDE) Firefox beta though. Never mind.

Yes, Linterna Magica is great. If you use Flash, it saves you installing Flashblock, FlashvideoReplacer, aned BetterPrivacy. And it works much better than any free alternative to proprietary Flash plugin.

Spread the word :-)

The current trunk (svn) version is better. It will soon go into stable, apparently.

I'm going to test it on Lubuntu.
