(My English is poor)
Use .avi videos is good? or have some ethical problem?
I am not a expert
:)
When in doubt about a video file format, I use this table:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_container_formats#General_information
AVI is referenced as proprietary (Microsoft).
... but can be played in freedom (e.g., using VLC, by default in Trisquel). Prefer WebM (with VP9) for your own works.
...or even better, the original Matroska MKV container.
I usually convert .avi files into .mkv files with Handbrake. It is available in Trisquel repository.
Do you transcode to redistribute the videos? Doing so, you lose quality.
> Do you transcode to redistribute the videos?
Yes and no: I do transcode but I do so only to avoid keeping content in a proprietary container format.
> Doing so, you lose quality.
Indeed, but marginally only, isn't it? Quality not being a crucial factor in my case (i.e. I cannot see the difference and would not care so much about it anyway) and HandBrake being one-click handy, I never tried to transmux instead. Do you know a good tool for transmuxing AVI into MKV? CLI is OK.
I use a software called WinFF to convert video and audio.
For video i use Webm and for audio OGG.
Thanks, now I only need to find out how to demux AVI with FFmpeg (to which WinFF is a graphical front-end).
I thought demuxing/muxing (transmuxing) instead of transcoding could be lossless.
This is beyond the scope of your original question though, so I might open another thread about it in the general forum.
VLC can transcode too. And Trisquel's repository includes more specialized applications with a GUI, such as HandBrake and Transmaggedon.
Use mp4, mp3, avi or other format is good for personal use?
In this talk RMS says that for distribute the recording is good to use a format if VLC can play it on a 100% free distro. Mp4, avi or mp3 works with VLC on Trisquel

Thanks, hailert. This is important to me.
Being able to play certain formats using entirely free/libre software doesn't mean that such formats are good.
For example, LibreOffice on Trisquel can open Microsoft OOXML files. Can we say MS OOXML is good just because we can read it using free software?
What is the problem to use formats like MP4, MP3 or AVI?
I don't really understand this
Software patents.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_patents_and_free_software
And:

AVI is non-free format.
Although MP3 patents expired in 2017, certain patents covering other MP* formats may still be valid.

You can do it using ffmpeg, something like:
$ ffmpeg -i input.avi -codec copy output.mkv
You can also do it in Avidemux by choosing copy for video and audio output options.
Thank you.
I had an idea it should be possible but was not sure how it worked.
