Hello, or Hola,

I'm a noob here, considering trying trisquel.
One thing I cannot live without is the ability to watch a DVD
every now and then.
What is the situation with Trisquel with regard to proprietorial DVD viewing?
Is it possible?

Thanks in advance,
Tex

It works absolutely fine as far as I can tell. You may want to install libdvdcss2:

sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

Hi,

Welcome to free software and Trisquel!

Here's our manual on dvd playback; I haven't tried this yet, but I will,
thanks to your inquiry.

I've used it to play DVDs in the past and it works quite well. Mine were US NTSC DVDs, I'm not sure what territory you're in or if it will matter.

Free software wise it isn't a problem and you can install the software needed with/on Trisquel as described elsewhere. The problem is/was digital restrictions. I forget if DVD boxes advertise this (I think they do) although most commercial DVDs use CSS (digital restrictions). The problem is with the US law. In the US there is something called the digital millennium copyright act. It makes bypassing digital restrictions or informing others how to do so illegal.

I tend to suggest avoiding technlogy with digital restrictions. Be it online entertainment that use things like silverlight/adobe flash or CPUs that are enablers. It's less of an issue because the technology is broken in this case although it probably shouldn't matter. You should probably still avoid it.

We don't ship blu-ray drives for a few reasons. One the technology is dead. But two because we (I'm talking about ThinkPenguin) would rather not endorse digital restrictions. Especially when the technology doesn't work well on GNU/Linux or work well with free software.

(and for those who think blu-ray is not a dead technology I'd love to know why we have never gotten a single email about it in near 5 years).

Thanks to all for hearty welcome.
I'm dloading ISO right now!

I'll check back in as to success or failure of install.
(my e353 Huawei dongle wireless has me worried: though mint and slack have recognized it)
Cheers and thx again,
Tex

This is a piece (or should say type) of hardware that isn't in our catalog I'd love to add (CEO of ThinkPenguin). I should look into it again. It's a bit difficult though because of potential non-free software issues, costs, and low demand. I think we would need to have at least two cards for the United States. I think there may be a chance though this card would work in Trisquel. I think there may not be any proprietary firmware which needs to be loaded by the operating system. It's at least possibly all self-contained.

>my e353 Huawei dongle wireless has me worried

Dunno how different it is from these but I've successfully used Huawei E220 and E1820 out of the box.
