Compiz has taken over my desktop

I just upgraded from 5.5 and one of the things I notice is that even though I chose Metacity, every time I boot up it is Compiz that is managing the Desktop. I have manually toggled Compiz on, then Metacity back on, and that works for the session, but when I reboot it is back to Compiz again. Part of the annoyance is that I cannot add launchers to the panel in Compiz. I do, however, like the live previews when you toggle with ALT+TAB.

You may edit a file in
"/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions"
The file is either "gnome-classic.session" or "gnome-fallback.session"

In the file replace
"DefaultProvider-windowmanager=trisquel-wm" with
"DefaultProvider-windowmanager=metacity"

when you are using metacity window manager
on the terminal just run "metacity -c" once.

The file for me was "gnome-classic.session

running 'metacity -c' gave me:
Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.

but I think I am good to go.

Thank you.

maybe logging -> logging in and then running "metacity -c" would do
It enables compositing for metacity or you could try gconf-editor:

applications->metacity

I used gconf-editor, but it did not come with my system so I had to install it via Synaptic. When I checked, compositing was already enabled, probably due to my 'metacity -c' earlier, despite warning.

Related bug, dunno if applicable here

That's definitely related to the issue lembas pointed.

To work around it, make an empty .disable-compiz file in your home folder. On way to do this is to write in a terminal the following and press enter:

touch .disable-compiz

Now my panel reliably disappears, but it is actually still functional if I mouse over where the items are. The applications menu will appear, it's just that the bar has gone completely invisible.
