Greetings ladies and gentlemen.

I've recently bought a Seagate Expansion portable drive (1 TB) and I have problems in choosing the correct file system and pastition ID. (Formating the drive)

I've currently selected ID 83 (linux) and ext4. My system recognize the device with no problem, but windows does not share the same fate. I've read documentation that suggests to format it under ID NTFS but I know that it belongs to Microsoft.

Do you know how to format an external hard drive (or a pendrive) in order to work for unix-like, mac and windows?

Thank you.

fat32 is recognized by windows, mac and gnu/linux. But the maximum file size is 4GB.

You might want to try Ext2Fsd. It is a driver for Ext2/3/4 supporting all versions of Windows from 2000 to 8, and i think it's free software under the GPL.

If you format your USB HDD ext3 then other people who use legacy
systems can access them if they search DuckDuckGo for

microsoft windows ext fs driver
apple mac os x ext fs driver

There's no need to compromise your own software freedom. I suggest
you recommend they upgrade to Trisquel as a first move as per the FSF
campaign if you think they'll listen.
