I have had this issue before, and I have solved it before (with the help of others, thanks) but I never figured out what was actually the problem - and hence why it was solved. Now I have the problem again, and I still can't figure out how to solve it.

The symptom is the following:
~$ sudo apt-get install enigmail
[sudo] password for gnubahn:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
enigmail : Depends: thunderbird (>= 38.0) or
seamonkey (>= 2.35) but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

My Thunderbird is version 38.8.0 so whu am I having this issue and how can I solve it?

Thanks, I should have stated that:

Yes, I have installed gnupg2 and checked for broken packages of which there were none

SOLVED!

Earlier, installing via Thunderbird caused problem which is why one (at least me) would install via terminal in the first place. In desperation I tried that approach again and voila! It is apparently fixed.

BTW, can I mark the thread as solved in the title?
