Maybe it requires "VirtualBox OSE Guest Additions", which is non-free (hence, absent from Trisquel's repositories): http:name at domain/msg00787.html

You can try to remove this package from your *buntu operating systems and see.

Most likely this will be the cause of the failed folder sharing between the two operating systems

If I recall correctly there is a free version of the guest extensions. I was
mistaken in thinking that the main software was free and the guest extension
was only available in a non-free form. There wasn't any obvious way to get
the code. The way things are/were setup it is/was just really confusing.

There is an older thread discussing the VB Guest Additions licensing. Also, I
read somewhere a long time ago that there is an effort to make a free version
of this extension.

Oracle VirtualBox is GPL the extensions are personal use only license:

* Licensing Information.

VirtualBox is released as *GPL*=> "Freely available for Windows, Mac
OS X, Linux and Solaris x-86 platforms."
VirtualBox Extension Pack => "*Free for Personal Use*, available for
Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris x-86 platforms."

(Extension Pack is required for USB 2 Access.)

I think there are two licenses that the extensions are released under which is what makes this confusing. Somewhere I believe you can find a version that is under the free license. Try posting on the virtualbox forums or maybe try doing a search for something within the last year or month.
