I have been trying to use mastodon for two years now. Over that time, I can only remember 3 interesting exchanges, I feel that most of the otherwise interesting people I followed (they have real blogs) post mostly uninteresting things on mastodon.

I wonder whether I am misusing mastodon (I can follow people but not topics unfortunately) or I am just not interested in micro-blogging.

Are there things in the fediverse that are not micro-blogging?

I've been on fedi since 2015, when it was only GNUsocial.
Fedi is mostly divided due to mastodon's blocklist, list initiated by microsoft employees on github and other alienated people. Pretty much people just copy paste blocklists without checking and a lot of good people are getting cast aside for no good reason.
Anyway mastodon is pretty much the no fun zone on fedi, then you have the other censored side that shouldn't be (shiposter.club etc...) and then the understandable legal censored side (pawoo, baraag etc...).
Overall it depends how you value your time and what you want to do. These days with my context I just try to chill and have fun.

I am thinking it is possible you can follow topics on Mastodon, assuming that your Mastodon runs up to date version. Should be as simple as following hashtags.

There are many things in the Fediverse which are not microblogging, mangeur de nuage mentioned a few, you can get an idea of others for example see at https://axbom.com/fediverse

There are also networks outside the so called Fediverse which might interest you, for example Movim.
