Why can't we use FreeMind anymore? I looked up the fork Freeplane in Add/Remove Programs and that won't install either (I recall something about "jdk" in the error message). The Windows version is still available and works ... why not our version?

What is the error message?
FreeMind was apparently abandoned. The latest stable release was in April 2014 an the last piece of news on http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page was posted in February 2016. Freeplane is actively developed.
EDIT: there actually is activity on https://sourceforge.net/projects/freemind/
